Georgia Baseball avoids Sweep on Sunday defeating Rider 9-3. After losing the first two games, Georgia’s bats finally came alive in the fourth inning of game three. The team put together a four-run inning to take and keep the lead on Sunday afternoon, giving the Bulldogs some momentum.
Chase Adkins started for Georgia on the mound Sunday pitching six innings. He struck out four batters, walked four and allowed four hits and one run. Adkins has allowed just one run in the last 21 innings pitched.
Rider struck early in the first inning with a walk, a base hit and a RBI ground out. After the first inning, Adkins and the defense hammered down to not allow another run until three pitchers later in the top of the 8th inning.
In response to Rider’s early score, Georgia’s offense loaded the bases in the bottom of the third. Rider pitcher, Paul Sparano walked Will Campbell awarding him with a RBI to push the tying run across home plate.
Keegan McGovern continued the rally in the fourth with a single to right field sending Trey Logan home with the go-ahead run. Michael Curry followed with a 2-RBI base hit to the right giving Georgia a 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs’ bats stayed hot as Cam Shepherd singled to the left and scored Aaron Schunk. After a wild pitch from Rider’s pitcher Anthony Arneth, Tucker Maxwell took the opportunity and scored from third. Maxwell’s two walks in the game put him at 11-straight games reaching base, which leads the team.
Schunk, scored four of Georgia’s runs today and seemed to be on base at the right times throughout the game. After a single to left field in the fifth, he scored the seventh run for Georgia. Schunk scored from first on an attempted pick-off by pitcher Nick Payesko, sending him all the way home off the errant throw.
However, Rider didn’t go down easy, scoring in the top of the 8th off a two-run home run. Georgia would respond and topped off the eighth with a base hit from Austin Biggar, marking the catcher’s hitting streak to seven games. Then a Maxwell base hit pushed Biggar and Schunk home for two more scores.
The Bulldogs sent in closing pitcher Trevor Tinder who pitched a scoreless ninth giving them a 9-3 victory.
Georgia will be back at home on Tuesday to take on Mercer at 6 p.m. to cap a two-game series. The team will also play Wednesday against Presbyterian with another 6 p.m. start time.
