Georgia Baseball: Bulldogs in Their Prime

In 2008 the Bulldogs made it to the College World Series only to lose to Fresno State in the finals. The Bulldog’s 2019 season is looking very similar to the 2008 season that led the team to Omaha, Nebraska.

After clinching their sold-out series against Vanderbilt for the first time since the 2008 SEC Championship in Nashville, Tennessee, Georgia is 27-6 overall and 9-3 in the SEC. As of April 2, they hold the #4 spot in the D1Baseball.com poll.

“We started feeling it back in the fall when we all came in”, said pitcher Tony Locey after Sunday’s game. “Now it is starting to show. It has been a long time coming. Georgia is at the spot Georgia should be.”

He also mentioned that the team still has a lot to prove.

“Last year we made a run and people didn’t think we were capable of doing it. Now this year we are trying to push forward”, he said. “We know what we are capable of doing and that we are one of the best teams in the country. We all know we are. We just have to keep going out there and playing with a chip on our shoulder. Keep proving to everybody that we are the best team in the country.”

A big part of the Bulldog’s success has to do with the chemistry on the team. The players do more than just get along, they are a tight knit group of friends on and off the field.

“We are just having fun. Everyone loves each other in the locker room and we all hang out outside of baseball”, said Chaney Rogers. “We are rooting for each other. It is a fun of ton seeing everyone do what we know we can do.”

Another aspect that has helped this team prevail is their resilience. Like the LSU series, the Bulldogs fell to Vanderbilt on Friday in the first game of the series but they did not dwell on the loss. Instead, the used it as fuel to come back and win the following two games.

“I think it shows that we are a pretty tough team”, said head coach Scott Stricklin. “Our team is really, really tough.”

As for post-season play, Stricklin says that he can’t think about that yet.

“I can wish and dream about it but at the end of the day you just have to worry about Georgia Tech on Tuesday and Tennessee on Thursday. We just have to keep doing what we are doing and keep our head above water and keep battling and competing.”
