Georgia Baseball Weekly Report – The Diamond Dawgs, (21-20 overall, 7-11 SEC), continue a school-record 22-game stretch against ranked opponents by playing host to Georgia Tech (27-13) for a Tuesday tilt and then head to Vanderbilt (30-10, 10-8 SEC) for an SEC series starting Friday.
Bulldog Notes
Georgia’s strength of schedule is among the best in the country. The Bulldogs are 7-10 against ranked teams this year, and that’s the fourth most wins of any SEC school as their RPI continues to climb. The previous Georgia record for consecutive games against ranked teams was 15 in 2005 when the Bulldogs went 6-8 with one rainout. Georgia is batting .248 with an ERA of 4.38 and fielding .967. In SEC action, the Bulldogs are hitting .261 with a 5.11 ERA and fielding .960. All four Bulldog games this week will be available on SEC Network+.
In records dating back to 1950, Georgia leads the all-time series with Tech 117-101. Bulldog head coach Scott Stricklin, who played collegiately at Kent State under Danny Hall, who is the current Tech coach, is 5-6 all-time against Tech. Georgia won the first meeting this year, posting a 3-1 victory over then #19 Tech in Atlanta on April 12. The teams will meet once more this season on May 17th at Turner Field to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The Bulldogs lead the Vanderbilt series 97-88, however the Commodores have won eight straight over Georgia. The last time the Bulldogs captured a series over VU came in 2008 when it clinched the SEC title in Nashville. Georgia won the series two games to one.
Last week, Georgia went 1-3 including a 2-1 win over No. 2 Florida that was the Gators first series-opening loss of the season. Junior Robert Tyler was superb in a no decision, pitching eight innings and allowing one run with nine strikeouts. Senior Heath Holder notched his first career victory, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings of relief with seven strikeouts as the Bulldogs won in 12 innings. Senior Nick King and junior Stephen Wrenn had three hits apiece in the win. Georgia’s bullpen tossed 11 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts in the UF series. In SEC action, Wrenn is batting .333-3-8 while King is next at .323-1-8.
Georgia’s leading hitters are juniors Skyler Weber (.299-2-22, 10 SB) and Stephen Wrenn (.287-3-19, 10 SB) while the RBI leader is sophomore Keegan McGovern (.264-5-16) who also has a team-high 32 walks. Tyler headlines the pitching staff at 3-3 with a 2.53 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 57 innings. Holder (1-2, 2.89 ERA) leads the SEC in lowest opponent’s batting average at .153 while Tyler is second at .177. Sophomore Bo Tucker has moved in to the rotation the past two weekends and is 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA and two saves.
