During Monday afternoon’s practice as the Georgia football team continues to prepare for Rose Bowl opponent, Oklahoma, the Bulldogs were working on some interesting techniques with their defensive lineman, which included one of their key members missing.

Offense:

James Coley was very animated in today’s practice, but for the most part, he was very pleased with his groups showing. The one portion where I remember Coley showing his disapproval was when wide receiver Akhil Crumpton dropped a pass that was slightly overthrown to him on an out route. Coley yelled “We don’t drop *blank* around here. We don’t even drop passes.”

Jayson Stanley continues to be a normal participant in practice and he even caught some praise from Coley during a drill as Coley yelled “Good Job Jayson” and gave Stanley a slap on the helmet. The rest of the Bulldogs offensive staff was for the most part even keel and on point with a normal Bulldogs practice.

Defense:

Defensive lineman Trenton Thompson was missing from practice today and it is unknown as for his cause for missing so this will be something to watch as the week progresses. Defensive line coach Tray Scott was working with his group on combo blocks, which is something that I have not seen this group work on this whole season.

Combatting combo blocks saw the defensive line working on holding up plays and not allowing offensive lineman to chip them into the direction they wanted to go before getting to the next level. It is clear that the Bulldogs expect this method to be used by the Sooners and it will be interesting to see what level of success they will have in this area.

Scott was also willing his men as he constantly yelled “I want it to burn. We have to be conditioned.” Kirby Smart came over to work with this group as well and for the most part seemed to be very pleased with how the players were performing overall.

Kevin Sherrer was working with the outside linebackers and there was a lot of focus on stopping the RPO and reading it properly. Sherrer seemed pleased with his linebackers performance as I did not see any players have to repeat the drill and only heard positive comments mixed with a few tips from Sherrer.

Mel Tucker was working with the defensive backs on defending the deep ball and his focus was not only defending the deep pass but creating turnovers. Tucker yelled “We gotta get it. That’s how its gonna be in the game.”

The Bulldogs still have plenty of practices left before the Rose Bowl and will need to keep supreme focus heading into their biggest game in the last few decades.
