The Georgia Football’s defensive coaching staff was challenging players on Wednesday afternoon constantly and it could be seen at all levels.
As soon as we reached the practice field you could hear coach Scott motivating his players by saying “That’s the tempo we want dang it. Who the (bleep) do you want to be?” I censored Scott some here but he was really trying to motivate his guys to give their all.
Scott was working with his group on pass rushing and he worked them in groups of two. I believe this could point to seeing outside linebackers playing more of a defensive end role with their pass rushing. Scott was preaching pad level and leverage as he always does, but he seemed pleased with how they were working.
The defensive line seemed to be healthy for the most part, but Daquan Hawkins-Muckle was missing from the group during the media viewing period. Trenton Thompson and David Marshall were both normal practice participants and going at full speed. Rashad Roundtree was at practice but was not practicing and was sticking with the defensive backs while in street clothes.
Outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer was working with edge rushing with his group and an assistant coach was constantly giving players a hard time. He would tell linebackers before the drill that he was going to knock them on the ground and they better come hard. The outside linebackers did well for the most part especially in staying low around the edge.
Kirby Smart worked with the safeties on defending hi-low and smash concepts and overall he seemed pleased with the group’s work. He gave Jarvis Wilson a lot of praise for his coverage as he made an interception on one of the plays.
The defense seems locked in and the coaching staff is not allowing them to take this game lightly.
