As the SEC Equestrian Championship looms on the horizon, the Georgia equestrian team is ready to take on the challenge for the conference title.
After a three week break off from competing, Georgia will host the SEC Championship at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, NC. on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29. The two day competition will end on Saturday with the SEC champion being crowned, earning them a spot in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) National Championships in Ocala, Florida on April 17-19.
No. 7 Georgia is 6-5 overall and 4-2 in SEC play this season. The last time the Georgia equestrian team competed, they fell to top-ranked Auburn, 11-8, on March 1. Despite ending the season with a loss, graduate Sophia Pilla proved a great performance.
In the last show against Auburn, Pilla earned her 11th career Most Outstanding Performer with a 91-point ride. Furthermore, Pilla was the only Bulldog to finish February with a perfect record, 3-0. Pilla was recently recognized for her outstanding performance in February as the NCEA Flat Rider of the Month. With an 8-3 record this season, Pilla will be a key rider to watch in the championship.
Led by head coach Meghan Boenig, the Georgia Bulldogs were named SEC champions in 2015, 2017, and 2018. Boenig led Georgia to a third place finish in last year’s championship.
The Auburn Tigers have been crowned the title for the past six years in a row.
The SEC Equestrian Championship will feature a head-to-head competition between the teams with riders competing in events such as equitation on the flat, equitation over fences, horsemanship, and reining.
