On Saturday evening, the Georgia Bulldogs lost to the No. 22 Mississippi State Bulldogs in an SEC matchup, 76-75. This is the first SEC matchup that has left Georgia defeated at the Stegeman Coliseum this season.
Sophomore Silas Demary Jr. led the Georgia Bulldogs with a career-high 23 points and seven assists in Saturday evening’s game. With eight seconds left on the clock in the second half, Demary scored two free throws that cut the lead to 76-75. With his career high, Demary Jr. is now the first Georgia Bulldog to score over 20 points and more than seven assists in a single game since 2021.
Three other Georgia Bulldogs also reached double figures against Mississippi State. Freshman Asa Newell tallied 16 points and also recorded a career high with three 3-point shots on Saturday evening. Following Newell, graduate Dakota Leffew scored 12 points and junior RJ Godfrey totaled ten.
The Georgia Bulldogs accumulated several fouls, allowing Mississippi State numerous opportunities to capitalize on free throws. With seconds left of the game, Mississippi State stole the ball and scored to give them that one-point advantage.
Head coach Mike White spoke about Saturday evening’s close matchup.
“This was a tough loss,” White said. “We did enough offensively. Our defense let us down tonight. Great opportunity, but not enough urgency in transition defense…Hats off to those guys. We’re going back to work tomorrow.”
Next up, the Georgia Bulldogs will travel to College Station for another SEC showdown. The Bulldogs will face No. 10 Texas A&M on Tuesday, Feb. 11 with tipoff set at 9 p.m.
