The Georgia football team’s thirteenth day of Fall Camp marked the first day of classes of Fall Semester for the Bulldogs. The terrible weather allowed the team to practice in the Indoor Athletic Facility. Players wore shorts and shoulder pads as the media viewed periods three and four. I watched a little of everything to day, so here are my takeaways from pratice No. 13.
Offense:
During period three, the media got another look at Georgia using the “Wild Dawg” formation with Mecole Hardman Jr., and Sony Michel taking the snaps. They handed the ball off to Nick Chubb, D’Andre Swift, and Elijah Holyfield during the drill. Jeremiah Holloman practiced without a brace or wrap on his arm after limited time on Saturday. As for the rest of the wide receivers, Ahkil Crumpton gets my impact player of camp. The guy is just lightning fast and his foot work just blows me away. He didn’t drop a pass while the media watched and showed off his speed every chance he got. Coley praised him each time he ran a drill, which seemed to make his confidence grow.
Isaiah Wynn returned to practice after he missed six days with an undisclosed illness. However, despite his absence, he took reps with the first team at left tackle. Andrew Thomas took some reps at right tackle today with the No. 1 unit while Isaiah Wilson took some at left guard.
Staying with the offense, the quarterbacks worked on some footwork drills. I noticed that there were six signal callers out there with the addition of walk-on Sam Vaughn. Today marked the first day that non-preferred walk-ons got to practice with the team. Jacob Eason looked to be on target again today after what seemed to be an off day on Saturday. Jake Fromm and Brice Ramsey both looked impressive with a few balls thrown like darts to the wide-outs.
Defense:
Next, I was able to watch the defensive backs work with head coach Kirby Smart. He was with them the entire fourth period. Coach Smart focused on players that we could see in the “star” position. I saw him work with Richard LeCounte, Aaron Davis, Dom Sanders, and J.R. Reed. Kirby stayed on these guys and pushed them to their limits trying to get the most out of the group. The d-backs pushed blocking sleds along the sidelines of the IAF. Defensive Coordinator appeared to be using the sleds as a discipline mechanism for the when the drill didn’t go as planned.
While watching the defense, I also noticed that Jonathan Ledbetter wasn’t there during the media periods. He was absent for Saturday’s scrimmage and Coach Smart said that he was another player dealing with an ‘undisclosed illness’ but would be back soon. The defensive line ran fundamental drills and Coach Trey Scott vocalized how the line needed to be intense. The first reps came from sophomore David Marshall, senior John Atkins, and junior Trenton Thompson. After that, the practice flowed along with various players rotating in on the d-line.
Day 13 marked the first day of classes for the team along with the walk-on additions, but this didn’t seem to affect the intensity of practice. Smart seemed to challenge his coaches to push each position group to the next level, and it showed during the two periods the media saw.
