Georgia returned to the indoor athletic facility for Day 22 of Fall camp. Although the media received a brief viewing period, we got to see a lot of good fundamental work. Head Coach Kirby Smart bounced from group to group to see what they were up to. Here are my three takeaways from Thursday afternoon’s practice.
1: Offensive Line Perfects Fundamentals
The offensive line focused on fundamentals while I observed them. Pittman also had the tight ends working with the tackles. Jeb Blazevich worked with the right tackles while Isaac Nauta with the left. The guards and center worked closely with Pittman. Georgia’s line worked on calling the middle linebacker out and making sure they understood plays. The ones appeared to be the same group as it has all week with Isaiah Wynn at left tackle, Pat Allen at left guard, Lamont Gaillard at center, Solomon Kindley at right guard, and freshman Andrew Thomas again at right tackle. Backing up Thomas at RT was redshirt freshman Ben Cleveland.
2: Eason’s Looks Ready for Game 1
I briefly got to watch the quarterbacks today, and Jacob Eason looked ready. I cannot convey in words how much the big sophomore quarterback exudes confidence and it shows through his throws. Eason threw perfect spirals, and I didn’t see one ball over or under thrown. His release and timing synced with the receivers and looked flawless. Another thing is he seems to have put on some good muscle weight onto that tall 6 foot 5 frame. As a Bulldawg fan, it excites me to see him and the receivers click so well on the field, and I cannot wait for the first game of the season to see if they can replicate what they are pulling off in practice when the lights come on on Saturdays this fall.
3: Emerging Wide Receiver Star?
I know I mentioned the wide receivers this fall camp, but they have just impressed me. The unit as whole clicks together and all the guys push each other. Like the tight ends, this position group is just as competitive in my opinion. Javon Wims and Ahkil Crumpton are two names that stood out from Day 22 and made me go “wow!” Crumpton especially, with his sure hand and quick feet, I don’t think I’ve seen him make many mistakes all camp. Wims looks to be that big wide out that Georgia needs for the deep ball. He received praise from James Coley today and just seems to love his spot on the outside opposite of junior Terry Godwin. The entire unit should be better than last year’s 2016 group and look for them to impress this season. This unit has certainly impressed me with their growth through Fall Camp.
Closing Tid Bits:
Despite being a brief media period, the twenty-second Bulldog practice showed me that the Georgia offense has definitely improved since last season and this past spring. Eason is more confident than ever. The offensive line; although, young, looks to have gotten some solid fundamentals down. Then there are the wide receivers and tight ends, who definitely ‘attacked the day.’
