Georgia Football: Day Four Spring Practice Report

Georgia hosted another full practice, with people watching everywhere. Both the offense and the defense maintained another high-intensity practice. Day four proved to follow the trend, and here are Michael Pope’s and my takeaways from Tuesday.

Savannah’s Offense Report:

Wide Receivers:

The offense continued fundamentals on Tuesday as they did last week. While I watched the wideouts, I noticed that Matt Landers moved up in the rotation. He took reps at the second rotation. Terry Godwin and Riley Ridley stayed in the first rotation. All the wideouts worked on blocking drills with a yoga ball. Wide receivers coach, Cortez Hankton would bounce the ball and the wideout had to hit it with his shoulder.

Quarterbacks:

Justin Fields and Jake Fromm continue to go head to head in practice. Fields made so many good throws, however, I saw a few wild ones in there too. Fromm appeared confident in his throws and I didn’t see a single wild one from him. The two seem to be connecting and establishing a relationship together. I saw them give each other high fives after a couple impressive throws.

Running Backs:

Dell McGee split the running backs up with two sets of quarterbacks. Fields and Fromm were on one side and Sam Vaughn and Stetson Bennett on the other side.

Here are the lineups for each side:

Fromms and Fields side:

#7 D’Andre Swift

#24 Prather Hudson

#3 Zamir White

Vaugh and Bennett’s side

#13 Elijah Holyfield

# 32 Kyle Levell

#36 Bender Vaught

Not sure that this means anything besides they want to equal the reps each back gets, but I’ll keep my eye on it. White ran through the drills with ease and continues to get better each day.

Offensive Line:

Not much has changed on the offensive line front. The line up is the same as last week. The first team went like this, Andrew Thomas (LT), Kendall Baker (LG), Lamont Gaillard (C), Ben Cleveland (RG) and Isaiah Wilson (RT). I saw D’Marcus Hayes run some reps at left tackle too along with walk-on Daniel Gothard.

Michael’s Defense Report:

Defensive Line:

I did not see Jonathan Ledbetter at practice today. I know he was nursing a thumb injury previously but he was still able to work with it in the past so I’m not sure what may be the deal with him.

Tray Scott was working with his defensive line group on getting low and pressing on a sled type-blocking machine. I heard Scott say “Get Low, That’s it, now stick inside,” per usual Scott was very involved in the practice. You can tell the focus is on fundamentals as Scott said to Michail Carter “Not bad, but let’s run it again.” He also gave Michael Barnett some props for his work in the drill.

Kirby Smart also got involved in the drill with the defensive line and it looked like he held up a bag against David Marshall and encouraged him against the drill.

Inside Linebackers:

Inside linebackers seemed to be working on striking and I only watched this drill once and this was the order I saw:
First: Juwan Taylor and Natrez Patrick
Second: Tae Crowder and Monty Rice
Third: Jaden Hunter and Nate McBride

Outside Linebackers

The outside linebackers seemed to work in this order D’Andre Walker, Robert Beal, Walter Grant, and then Brenton Cox. When ordering the group to move to another station, Lanning said “Opposite side D-Walk” so it seems D’Andre Walker is becoming a leader at this position.

Lanning was very active with his group, which is no surprise and he even hit the bags a couple time to encourage his guys. This was on the same machine that the defensive line worked on. He told Brenton Cox to keep his hips parallel during the drill.

Cornerbacks

I do not recall seeing Eric Stokes out there working today, but I may have just missed him so don’t quote me on that. This was the order I saw when the cornerbacks were working:

First group: Deandre Baker and Tyrique McGhee
Second group: Ameer Speed and Mark Webb
Third Group: #27(he is not listed on the roster, trying to find out who it is, it could be Stokes but it did not look like him) and William Poole
Fourth Group: Darius Jackson and KJ Smith

Safeties

An assistant working with safeties was yelling for guys to “Keep running” while they worked on tracking the ball down in the air. Safeties worked in this order:
First: Richard LeCounte III
Second: J.R. Reed
Third: Jarvis Wilson
Fourth: Latavious Brini
Fifth: Tray Bishop

Bits and Pieces from Practice.

There was some star power present at the Bulldogs practice today as I saw quarterback Aaron Murray, former Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, and for you Last Chance U fans defensive line coach Davern Williams was present. Williams now coaches at Chattanooga as an assistant defensive line coach.

Recruits Tyler Fromm and RB Kevin Harris were at practice. Former Miami Dolphin DE Jason Taylor was also at practice. He wore a Georgia Hoodie.
