Rashad Roundtree made his return to practice after missing the past few weeks but he was not practicing in his normal position.
Roundtree, who is listed as an inside linebacker, was actually practicing with the safeties during the Bulldogs’ Wednesday practice in preparation for Mississippi State. Roundtree was recruited out of high school as a defensive back and safety and with the apparent lack of depth in the secondary that Kirby Smart has commented on numerous times, it is not a huge surprise to see Roundtree back with this group.
Roundtree is recovering from concussion-like symptoms so he donned a black non-contact jersey during practice. Malkom Parrish, who is also recovering from an injury, a broken bone in his foot that he had surgery to repair several weeks ago, was practicing at what seemed to be full speed and with no limitations. I fully expect Parrish to be involved in the Bulldogs defensive gameplan for Mississippi STate.
The defensive line was working on their initial step and strike and seemed to be impressing defensive line coach Tray Scott. It appeared to me that Scott was coaching up his lineman to contain the quarterback and keep him in the pocket; so, it sounds like the goal of this group is to keep Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald from running the ball too much and forcing him to pass, not unlike Georgia did when they faced Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush.
The outside linebackers also seemed to be working on their edge rushing abilities as they constantly were practicing on keeping their bodies low and running tight angles to get around the edge. The Georgia defense clearly has put their focus on stopping Fitzgerald and if they can execute their gameplan properly, then they should come out of their SEC opener with a win.
