Georgia Football Expects Perfection in Tuesday Practice

Tuesday marked day two of practice for Georgia in preparation for Saturday’s matchup against Vanderbilt. Despite being 5-0, coaches continued to push and urged for more from their players. Head coach Kirby Smart doesn’t accept anything less than perfection. Tuesday’s message seems to be, strive for perfection and accept no complacency. After two quick media periods, here are my takeaways from Tuesday.

Offense:

The Georgia coaching staff continued to push both Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason as they compete for the start versus Vanderbilt. Eason jogged and pretended to cover the receivers as they would switch sides in drills. He acted like the knee didn’t bother him at all. Fromm threw with the ones still, with a focus on perfecting his throws. Jim Chaney and James Coley had some pretty colorful vocabulary they were using, and it seemed to get the attention of the players.

Solomon Kindley stayed at first-team right guard for the second day, it seemed he is back at his old position after he hurt his ankle in the Mississippi State game. The offensive line as a whole worked on chop blocks, double teams, and various other fundamental things. I’ve been asked about the first and second team O-line rotations, but the way practice was set up during the media viewing period, there was no clear one’s or two’s as they mainly worked on fundamentals.

Coley’s wideouts had some drops today, which caused him to yell “bull crap” a lot. He told Riley Ridley that his excuse of why he dropped a pass was “bull crap.” Ahkil Crumpton got some much-needed reps during the period and didn’t drop anything including a low pass by Eason. I believe it is only a matter of time before it all clicks for the junior college transfer player, and we will see him make an impact on the field.

Defense:

There was no sign of Trent Thompson, who went out in the Tennessee game with a strained MCL. The defensive line worked on speed and getting off on the block. However, if the lineman didn’t exceed or perform up to coach Trey Scott’s liking, they would do pushups. As with the other position coaches, Scott pushed for perfection and tried and tricked each guy during the drill to see how they handled it and how “mentally tough” they were.

Kirby Smart worked with the linebackers and told them, “We’re out here to get better, now!” He refused to let the group get complacent about how they practiced and his words seemed to motivate and push the guys. In that linebacker group, Davin Bellamy continued to wear a club on his left hand, but it did not seem to affect him.

Bits and Pieces:

The Georgia coaching staff preached perfection and steered clear of complacency. Mark Christensen yelled when the media first got outside, “Let’s go!!!! You cannot rest!” Christensen, the supportive rehab assistant, reminded and urged the team that even though its Vandy, complacency shouldn’t be in their minds. I did notice a Bills scout watching the wideouts and quarterbacks during the media period. Georgia will continue to prepare for the Commodores on Wednesday. Saturday’s game in Nashville is set for a 12:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
