Savannah’s Offense Report
Offensive Injury Report:
- Terry Godwin out with the knee injury.
- Kearis Jackson out with hamstring injury.
- Jackson Harris out with foot injury.
Tight Ends:
The tight ends worked a lot with blocking during the first part of the media period. One of the drills the worked through was a basic blocking drill. During that drill, Luke Ford almost knocked Nauta on his tail. Chaney wasn’t impressed. Everything they did he complained about. Talk about tough love. After they finished the blocking drill, they joined the WR to run routes and catch passes from the quarterbacks. I have to say Nauta’s routes looked so much crisper than they did last season. He didn’t miss a ball his way and made a lot of nice grabs. His running seems a lot smoother as well.
Luke Ford is a monster and is so strong. John Fitzpatrick is a grown man too. Neither one of the dropped a pass today. Ford and Fitzpatrick both made some catches that looked too easy.
Wide Receivers:
The wideouts first worked on routes and making good cuts. At one point Holloman came up beside me and stood there as he waited for his next turn. He’s massive, just massive. Holloman’s added on some weight this offseason and looked like a new receiver. Tommy Bush made a nice grab today, and evidently, Coley thought he ran a nice route. He yelled at him, “Good route Tommy!!” Other than that I didn’t hear many more compliments. Ahkil Crumpton has arrived. Crumpton can catch, but his routes and just knowledge of the game seem so much higher than it was last season. I predict he could have a breakout season.Quarterbacks:
Jake Fromm seemed to have a little bit of an off day. He threw a couple behind his targets. He didn’t look as good as Fields today, but they both made some impressive throws. Coley had them working on drop backs before getting them with the wideouts. All of the quarterbacks worked on their footwork and making various passes. Fields has one heck of an arm, and he can make throws happen. Fromm made some nice throws as well but didn’t seem as crisp as Fields did though.Offensive Line:
The first thing I noticed was that Pittman had the OL group split with him and one of the assistant coaches. Each group worked on some fundamentals that we often see from them. The first drill was a pass protection footwork drill. Ben Cleveland looked the best during that drill in my opinion. The next drill they worked through was the drill where they make the initial block and then pick up the next block downfield; this is where a linebacker would be.
Pittman’s group consisted of:
– 53: Lamont Gaillard
– 65: Kendall Baker
– 71: Andrew Thomas
– 79: Isaiah Wilson
– 72: Netori Johnson
– 74: Ben Cleveland
– 50: Warren Ericson
– 68: Sean Fogarty
– 55: Trey Hill
– 66: Solomon Kindley
– 69: Jamaree Slayer
– 77: Cade Mays
Before I credit individual guys for their effort in practice today, I want to note that this offensive line group appears to be in great shape. All of the guys barely have guts and seem so much more athletic. Some guys that stood out during these drills were Jamaree Salyer, Cade Mays, and Isaiah Wilson. Salyer looked good during both drills and shined through them. Mays is one massive human being and looked impressive. Wilson looked slim and trim and continued to compete alongside what appears to be the starters. I’m not sure exactly what the group means for these players, but Pittman worked closely with all of them.
Steve’s Defense Report
Injury update for the defense:
-Tyrique McGhee injury was confirmed by Kirby Smart today as a broken bone in his foot. He has not been ruled out for game one.
-Robert Beal was not seen participating in drills.
-Divaad Wilson is still recovering from his knee injury but should be fine.
Day 11 Defense Notes
-The entire time we were out there the defense was running a four-station circuit with each position group getting work with different coaches. Kirby Smart was high energy and all over the place not letting up on anyone today. Kirby’s main victims during our viewing period were Mark Webb and Tyson Campbell. This was during a pass-rushing drill where they were working on blitzing the QB and striping the ball away. Kirby got into both of them and said,” Wake up! Go get the d**n ball!”-This is not an observation I made today, but something I’ve been noticing is Otis Reese. I love his demeanor and play style. Right now, Smart, has him working at the safety position and star but I think he will fit in best at the star position. The kid has a good head on his shoulders and is going to obliterate someone on kickoff this season.
-I think Jordan Davis is struggling a little bit mainly because he is 6’6 and it’s hard for him to get leverage on the defensive line. The kid is strong and athletic, but to I think he is most likely going to be redshirted this season. However, my initial thoughts of him are just wow. That is one large human being.
-Natrez Patrick is starting to look better every day, and I’m beginning to think he is going to legitimately have a prominent role for the inside linebackers this season. This will also be needed as he has the most experience of any player in this position group. Monty Rice is going to be a stud, but I think the physically gifted freshman Quay Walker and Channing Tindall from are the future just based on a talent standpoint.
-Brenton Cox got a little breather today while we were out there at least. Yesterday I mentioned Kirby Smart getting onto him for getting an attitude. Today all seemed fine as Kirby focused on the secondary mostly.
-Jay Hayes is going to be crucial to the defensive line this season. I think it will become apparent to everyone early on in the season.
