Georgia scrimmaged in Sanford Stadium today, but the media’s viewing period was only eight minutes. Hhere are a few takeaways on offense and defense from practice.

Quick Hits:
-Terry Godwin was absent again nursing a knee injury according to Smart but is going to be fine
-Divaad Wilson (Knee) and Kearis Jackson (Knee) were both doing individual work on the sidelines and did not participate
-Mark Webb returned from nursing an injury and was full go
–Nate McBride on the sideline on an exercise bike

Offensive Line:

I got a good glimpse of the offensive line today up close for the first time in a while. Instead of the unit being on the far side of the field when they are on the practice fields I was about ten yards from them today. Being as close as I was you really get to appreciate the size of those guys. Specifically, Isaiah Wilson and Ben Cleveland are ridiculously massive. The right side of the offensive line is going to be really hard to move for opposing defenses and will be pushing kids around.

Tight Ends:

I watched the tight ends closely today and witnessed not one dropped pass. Charlie Woerner and Isaac Nauta are going to be great this season, but I’m still not sure how the ball will be distributed this year under Chaney’s offense. There are so many weapons that the tight ends may not get much love but like Woerner said the other day as long as they are doing whats best for the team and win thats all that matters.

Wide Receivers:

Demetris Robertson is now eligible to play this season. That is another 5 star folks to an already stacked offense. I don’t think Georgia has a single receiver right now that isn’t capable of playing or contributing. Thats how stacked this position group is. You have the clear starters like Terry Godwin, Riley Ridley, and Mecole Hardman, but everyone else that is fighting for playing time is extremely talented and just as good as the guys listed above.

Quarterbacks:

I call it like I see it. Justin Fields throws a prettier ball and has a stronger arm than Jake Fromm. Does that mean that I think Fields will start? No, Jake Fromm will be the starter without question however Justin Fields is as talented as he is hyped up to be. Having said all that I am really excited about what Fromm is going to bring to the offense because he is a seasoned proven winner/leader who is ready to take his game to the next level and keep Georgia football at a championship level.

Secondary:

I did not hear Kirby say Richard LeCounte’s name once. Whether thats a good or bad thing I don’t know, but he did mention at the press conference that,”Richard did not make any bad plays, but he also did not make any good plays either.” Smart is looking for LeCounte to become more of a disciplined player at the safety position and focus on doing the assignment and not always making the big plays.

Projected Starters as of right now seem to be as follows:
Corners: Mark Webb, Deandre Baker
Safeties: Richard LeCounte, Deangelo Gibbs
Star (this position is fluid as many players will get to rotate here): Typique McGhee

Linebackers:

Its been mentioned often but its hard not to say it again. This is the most physically ready freshman class that I have ever seen. I’m really excited to see what all these guys are capable of doing as right now Kirby is swimming in wealth at the inside and outside linebacker spots. Deandre Walker is primed and ready for his moment. He has really taken over as a leader and realized that this is his year to shine. I would set his over/under for sacks at 9.5 this season.

Defensive Line:

The main concern here is just having guys who are able to take over and dominate a game. I do not think Georgia has any guys capable of single handily changing a game, but that isn’t to say this group won’t be good. The depth is certainly there for Georgia and a few guys might need to step up like Hawkins-Muckle at the nose, but Tray Scott and the Bulldogs are in good hands this season.
