Jacob Eason’s availability for Georgia’s SEC opener against Mississippi State is one of the large headlines at practice this week and we got some insight on the sophomore QB at practice today.
Offense
J. Eason did not show his mobility at practice, but he was wearing the normal black jerseys that the quarterbacks don and was playing catch with the rest of the quarterbacks. This should be an encouraging sign of what his availability may be for Saturday and could point to him starting for the first time since the season opener against Appalachian State. It should, however, also be noted that Eason was wearing a knee brace at practice today.
The other two questionable players were Sony Michel and Michael Chigbu and both of them seemed to be full participants that were practicing with no limitations. Chigbu and the wide receivers were working on beating the press coverage and slapping away defenders hands and coach James Coley seemed to be pleased with his receivers’ effort.
Defense
The most encouraging thing to see for the Bulldogs on the defensive side of the ball was the return of cornerback Malkom Parrish and he seemed to be a full participant with no limitations. Parrish was even in a regular practice jersey and was not in a non-contact jersey, which should be even more encouraging because that means the coaching staff trusts that his foot has healed enough to allow him to play at full speed and full contact.
The cornerbacks were working on a drill which saw them defending and catching the deep ball and Parrish was able to run and jump in the air with no issues as he made the catch. After seeing just a short amount of practice with Parrish, I fully expect him to be ready to go for the Bulldogs SEC opener.
Rashad Roundtree has also been missing from practice for the past few weeks with concussion-like symptoms, but he was back today. However, he was not a full participant and he was only seen working on the exercise bike. It seems Roundtree is making some progress but he still is trying to get over his issues with a concussion.
Finally, the defensive line was receiving a lot of encouragement from coach Tray Scott and getting their pad level lower. Scott was constantly yelling for his guys to get their pad level down and I cannot recall a time I have heard the words pad level so often. However, it seemed Scott was pleased but just wanted to give that constant encouragement of keeping their pads low. Tyler Clark was dressed out, but I did not see if he participated during the media viewing period.
This opening practice for the SEC opener gave an idea of where the Bulldogs are in terms of injuries to key players like Jacob Eason, Sony Michel, and Malkom Parrish and it will be interesting to see how involved each of these players are throughout the week.
