Georgia took the practice field in preparation for its upcoming game against Texas. The team was outside on this gorgeous day, and some new faces joined the group. Below are my observations from Monday’s practice.

Offense Report

— Clay Webb was out at practice today. He was the only one wearing shorts, and of course, had them rolled up like he is notorious for wearing them. Webb donned the No. 60 jersey. He participated in all of the drills and the team seemed to be comfortable with him.

— Cade Mays returned to practice today and ran with what appeared to be the first string.

— Ben Cleveland practiced and ran with what seemed to be the second team at right tackle.

— The quarterbacks and running backs worked through handoff drills and then worked on a little go route drill where the back swings from the backfield and goes downfield. I saw both Elijah Holyfield and D’Andre Swift catch this pass with ease. During this drill, I heard Jake Fromm ‘Wooo’ a few times after the backs caught their passes.

— Justin Fields was out there and doing the same thing he has all season long. He had a few good passes himself.

— Jim Chaney had his tight ends work through their usual blocking drills. Will note that Isaac Nauta looked strong, really strong today. I’m not sure if he bulked up some this season, but he looked massive out there.

Defense Report

— Both Dan Lanning and Tray Scott had their units working with the tackling machine. Each group worked on getting a good push and striking past the opponent. During this drill, Scott told them to have “heavy hands” and to “strike out your hip.”

— Scott and Lanning almost mimicked each other during this drill. They’re both technical and good at explaining what they want from their players each drill.

— Tramel Walthour was out and practicing. He wore No. 90 and like Webb was in shorts too. He participated in all the drills and looked more massive than I remember him looking in high school.

— The defensive backs worked on various fundamental drills. One of the ones I saw was them working on their vision when it came to long passes. The drill had them catch it, and they almost looked like wide receivers, but they were all turning their heads to see the ball.

— If I’m not mistaken, D.J. Daniel was out there too and wearing No. 4. I didn’t get to watch him long, but will the next time we get media time.
