Georgia’s offense continued to prep for Florida on Wednesday as they tried to perfect the passing game. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney had both Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason throw various passes that challenged the wideouts. Wednesday seemed to focus on making every catch count and putting those catches into play every time.
Chaney vocalized the most during practice and had plenty to tell the offense. He told the wideouts “catch every ball first.” Then he said, “quarterbacks got to get completions, and we got to put it in play.” For the passing game to work, receivers must catch the ball first and then they have to be fast enough to make a play. These remarks go back to his fast and disciplined comment he made on Tuesday.
Each receiver made it a point to catch every ball thrown to them. I didn’t see a pass dropped while I watched the receivers. James Coley kept saying, ” you got to get six,” and “drive, drive drive.” As one of the most vocal coaches on the field, Coley seemed quiet today and in the zone. Despite the receivers not dropping a pass, Coley didn’t seem pleased when he yelled, “What did we talk about? Run after the catch!”
Javon Wims ability to go up and catch a ball is impressive. He made two big grabs during the viewing period that just made me go wow. As the season goes on, Wims just seems to improve each week. Jayson Stanley returned to practice and ran through the drills without any noticeable problems. Stanley’s been a force on special teams as he is the gunner on both kickoff and punt coverage teams.
As for the rest of the offense, the groups seemed to work on fundamentals. The tight ends worked on chop blocks and pancake blocks. Coach Shane Beamer got into the drill physically showing the players what he wanted out of them. Sam Pittman, the offensive line coach, had his unit focus on pass blocking schemes. He worked them with the chute as well to get that exploding motion and make sure the hips are rotating correctly. Dell McGee has the running backs work on some quick routes and blocks.
Georgia’s practice week comes to a close, but the team seems ready for SEC East rival Florida.
