Today, the media got to view practice for about five minutes. Following the loss to South Carolina, it seemed like Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was trying to get back to the basics. The team was practicing in helmets and shoulder pads. Here are some extra notes from practice:

Jake Fromm (11)
Jake Fromm (11)

Offense:

  • Wide receiver Lawrence Cager was not seen at today’s practice, and Smart doesn’t know when he will be back. Cager has been battling a shoulder injury for part of the season, and against South Carolina, he came off the field in the second half after coming down on his left arm and shoulder. He was unable to return.
  • The receivers were running fly routes, and working on getting more open in space. Demetris Robertson, Matt Landers, and Dom Blaylock all caught passes in front of me.
  • Jake Fromm was in at first-string quarterback, and Stetson Bennett IV was throwing passes behind him.
  • In the first offensive line group, Trey Hill was at center, Cade Mays was at left guard, Isaiah Wilson was at right tackle, Andrew Thomas was at left tackle, and was at Ben Cleveland right guard.
  • Solomon Kindley was present but was not participating in drills from what I could see.
  • Justin Shaffer was absent from the media viewing period. He suffered an injury, disclosed as a “sprained neck” during the South Carolina game and was not able to return.
  • One spot of good news, senior running back Brian Herrien was at practice after missing the South Carolina game with back spasms.

Defense:

  • Tyson Campbell was at practice today and was participating in drills; however, he didn’t look to be moving at full speed.
  • The defensive line was working on exploding off the ball. Then they were doing a punching like motion that helps them practice to keep offensive players’ hands off them.
  • David Marshall and Michael Barnett were first in line during the drill.
  • Freshman defensive lineman Travon Walker was absent once again. He was spotted on the sideline during the South Carolina game with a sling on his left arm.
  • The outside linebackers were practicing with defensive coordinator Dan Lanning and assistant Jarvis Jones. They were working on footwork, jumping over dummies, and turning up field in pursuit of a ball carrier.
  • “We’ve got to hit our goals, and live up to our standards,” said Lanning.
  • Azeez Ojulari was really vocal today in the drills. He seemed very confident, and yelled at one point, “we know we can do better.”
