Georgia continues preparations for Kentucky Tuesday afternoon for another gorgeous afternoon. Today’s atmosphere was all about defending the East, and various position coaches reminded the team that. There was a high intensity to the practice, and the coaches stayed on the players through every rep. Steve and I give our takeaways for Tuesday’s practice.
Savannah’s Offense Report
— Jim Chaney continues to emphasize blocking with his tight ends. He told them as they worked through pad blocking, “I want great reps guys!”
— Then Chaney told the group, “What are you thinking guys? You’re getting ready to play the number one defense in the conference, so GET READY!”
— The quarterbacks and running backs stayed together for a short while and worked through a handoff drill, handing the ball off to the right and left sides.
— Georgia’s offensive line split into positions, the right tackles were in one group, the center and guards in another and the left tackles in a group. John Theus worked with the left tackles through while one of the assistants helped the right tackles. These two groups worked on a block and release drill.
— Sam Pittman worked with the centers and guards through a similar drill.
— Cortez Hankton had his group work through a sharp hook route drill that had a defensive back put tight coverage on the wide receiver who attempted to catch a quick pass.
— Georgia’s running backs then moved onto ball handling drill and protecting the ball through tackles.
— The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a scout out there today watching both sides of the ball.
Steve’s Defense Report
— Defensive line coach, Tray Scott seemed quite motivated during Tuesday’s practice. He ran a drill where during each rep he would tell the player going this, “We’re building walls for the East!” And when I say every rep, I mean every rep even if the player had to do the drill multiple times.
— Scott was also on Jordan Davis today saying, “You’re the first one to f*** this drill up JD!” Davis has really come along and has the one thing you can’t teach in brute strength and power, but still has some technical learning to do. This kid is only going to get better.
— Netori Johnson still working with the defensive line today. It’s looking like this could be a permanent position change for the big guy. Scott helped him through a few reps telling him where to put his hips, hands and how to get in the stance properly.
— DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle (undisclosed) still absent from practice
— David Marshall (foot) also absent from practice. His return timetable is still uncertain at this point.
— The ILB’s worked on shedding blockers and tackling. This drill worked mainly on fundamentals and this is no surprise because this has been the most suspect position group of the team this season. Tae Crowder and Monty Rice are two players that have continuously stepped up this season.
