Shunta Grant – Mecca Gamble Photography 2021

Name: Shunta Grant

Family: My family of four includes my husband Germaine, our daughter Zoe, and our son Liam!

Hometown: Atlanta

Current Town: Greenville, South Carolina

What Years at UGA: 2005-2008

School/Degree: School of Law/Juris Doctor

Profession: I help humans become better stewards of their time every single day. For almost 10 years I have helped consumers, corporate teams, and organizations make time their ally. I am the founder of Best Today®, a company that provides physical and digital resources that help consumers become more proficient and well-rounded planners.

My work has been featured in Forbes and Essence magazine and I’ve had the joy to work with law firms, nonprofits, universities, churches, small businesses, thousands of everyday consumers, and ‘beyond. As’ a former attorney, a business owner, wife, and mother of two, I understand the unique challenges that come with trying to optimize your time day in and day out. My work helps humans become better stewards of their time by teaching them how to provide the highest level of contribution to the places that matter most whether that is your team, work, family, community, organization, school, or ‘church. My’ work ranges from speaking at events, leading team or group workshops, coaching corporate clients, and leading my own community of women, the Best Today® Community, teaching them how to leverage their talent and time in a way that allows them to live a well-rounded and full life.

Book: You will (almost) always find me within arms reach of a book. Some recent favorites include Everyday M.A.G.I.C. by Mattie James (1), Glucose Revelation by Jessie Inchauspe, The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel, and the Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John MarkComer. I’m currently reading The Courage to be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi.

Podcast: My own, the Best Today® podcast which is filled with relevant, real-time information about how to become a better steward of your time and live a life of intention. I’m also currently enjoying the “That Was Us” podcast which is a rewatch podcast of the television show This Is Us.

Blog: When I read blogs my favorite was Young House Love (2) by John and Sherry Petersik! You can find me on substack, For Those on the Journey is where I write about living a life of intention and how to become a better steward of your time and what both of those look like in my life. It is a delightful mix of thought-provoking writing, lifestyle, and what’s on my mind in the moment. I also have a second substack, Invitation to Abide, where I share scripture-based studies and writings that invite the reader to abide more deeply in the Word of God.

Instagram: Because I’m in a season of deep focus and creating/writing I do not allot much time to enjoying the content of others on social media.

Brand: Peloton! I am a daily Peloton app user and enjoy the variety of instructors that Pelotonoffers. I have the bike+ but I currently take their running, strength, and mobility classes the most as I am in my running season.

Fashion designer: Because I am such a denim lover, Ralph Lauren is a favorite. His denim skirts are among some of my favorites and one of my go-to uniforms is a denim skirt and a crisp white Ralph Lauren button down!

Interior designer: Amber Guyton of Blessed Little Bungalow (3), I love her use of color and her joy spills over seamlessly into her work and designs! I also enjoy the work of Carmeon Hamilton, winner of Design Star Next Gen. Her use of plants/greenery in each design as an homage to her mother pulls me into all of her designs.

Chef: My two favorite food bloggers/recipe developers are Brandi Crawford of Stay Snatched (4) and Ashlea Carver of All the Healthy Things. If I ever need ideas or a recipe for anything I start at their websites.

Historical figure: I admire the boldness of apostles Paul and Peter and strive to live with a similar boldness for truth telling about the kingdom of God! opportunities.

Quote:

For someone who loves words, this is a tough ask! I’ll share two.

“I have already settled it for myself so flattery and criticism go down the same drain and I am quite free.” GeorgiaO’Keefe

“Where there is no vision, the people perish …” Proverbs 29:18

Describe Athens in five words or less: Big and small at the time.

Restaurants and bars: Cake from Cecilia’s Cake Shop (red velvet is my favorite) (5) and the the chocolate cake from The Grit (sadly now closed but their chocolate cake was 10/10). I also ate many, many meals at Thai Spoon during school since it is a short walk from the law school.

Athens/campus landmark: The library inside of the law library, if you know, you know! Until I had my own office as Managing Editor of the Georgia Law Review, the quiet library was one of my favorite places on campus, second only to the study rooms with dry erase boards on the undergrad campus. Can you tell what I spent most of my time in Athens doing? Studying!

Memory while in school: I still talk about my time spent at Professor Anne Dupre’s home where she invited her students for time away from thick books and the Socratic method. I taught her how to play mafia and she introduced me to my favorite french onion dip! She was a no nonsense professor, she stretched me academically, and she was one of the kindest people. I thought it was so kind for her to open her home to us. She passed away a few years after I graduated. I miss her dearly and think of her often.

Professor/class: There are three standout professors who come to mind immediately– Anne Dupre for the reasons I shared above. Randy Beck, who was my first year Property Professor, was the most warm and patient professor I have ever experienced. He made us all feel capable! And lastly, Professor Erica Hashimoto who taught me Criminal Law my first year(among other classes). I loved her joy and honestly she had us all at her very special way of saying, “Hello!” I’ve always said if I were ever to teach, I would be a blend of those three. Kind, no nonsense, full of joy, and they all cared so deeply for us and it showed!

Gameday ritual/plan: Grocery shop during the game while the streets were empty and then lock myself back in my house for the remainder of the day to avoid traffic. I loved it!

Tailgate Recipe: Popcorn on the couch at home! Interestingly enough, I attended my first and only tailgate at UGA in 2023 for ESPN gameday to meet one of my favorite Peloton Instructor,Jess Simms.
