The Georgia women’s golf team opened the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with a 303 in Friday’s opening round. The Bulldogs are tied for 13th with No. 12 Wake Forest and Alabama in a stacked field featuring seven top-10 and 12 top-20 teams.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs received steady play from Manuela Carbajo Ré, Sammi Lee and Isabella Skinner on Friday. Carbajo Ré led Georgia with a 3-over 74, while Lee and Skinner added a pair of 75s. Harang Lee rounded out the Bulldogs’ counting tallies with a 79.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs teed off from No. 10 and played the back side of the Long Cove Club first. Georgia struggled early and played the first five holes at a combined 14-over and turned at 18-over.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs rallied and were 1-over as a team on the front side, with Sammi Lee shooting 1-under, Carbajo Ré at even-par and Harang Lee and Skinner both at 1-over.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “They played great on our back nine,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “They showed a lot of courage and guts to put up a good number after the first five or six holes. It was hard out there and the weather wasn’t the best. The way we played those last 10-12 holes was a great sign and should give us a shot of momentum heading into the weekend.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Overall, Carbajo Ré is tied for 22nd, Sammi Lee and Skinner are tied for 35th, Harang Lee is tied for 66th and Sylvie Brick, who signed for an 84, is tied for 86th.
[su_spacer size=”40″] A 2-under 69 from Gabriella Then of Southern Cal helped place the Women of Troy atop both the individual and team leaderboards. Then owns a one-shot lead over Tennessee’s Anna Newell, North Carolina’s Leslie Cloots, Southern Cal’s Karen Chung and Arkansas’ Gaby Lopez. No. 2 Southern Cal is six shots ahead of No. 8 LSU.
