The Georgia Lady Bulldogs, now 3-0, defeated the Furman Paladins this Saturday afternoon at the Stegeman Coliseum, 74-46. Senior De’Mauri Flournoy helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to victory with 18 points, a season high.
Georgia and Furman were both 2-0 going into Saturday’s game, but Georgia broke their winning streak.
The Furman Paladins only held the leading score within the first minute of the game, 3-0. The Bulldogs were up the rest of the game, with the largest lead in the 4th quarter of 29 points (68-39).
At the end of the first half, the Bulldogs were only up by 8 points. The Paladins had several personal fouls that created more scoring opportunities for the Bulldogs. In the first half, the Paladins were 1-2 for free throws, where the Bulldogs were 8-12.
Throughout the second half, Georgia grew hungrier for the win and ultimately outplayed Furman offensively and defensively. In the end, Furman scored 2 of 20 3 pointers and Georgia scored 6 of 21. Georgia was more aggressive for the ball, with 10 steals and only 11 turnovers while Furman had 6 steals and 21 turnovers.
The Georgia Lady Bulldogs proved great offense in Saturday’s game that was no match for the Paladins to compete against. Five players scored in the double digits; Flournoy, senior Asia Avinger, freshman Trinity Turner, junior Amiyah Evans, and freshman Summer Davis. Avinger also scored a season-high of 17 points and led the team with a high of 2 assists. Furthermore, Evans led the Bulldogs with 9 rebounds.
While Flournoy led the team offensively against the Paladins with 18 points, she also brought the intensity of the defensive side with a steal.
“The coaches preach about defense everyday,” Flournoy said. “I know that if I don’t play defense, I’m on the bench.”
The freshmen are still proving to be key additions to the team. Turner added 11 points for the win and Davis scored 10.
Head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson spoke about her new team this season that is a mix of competitive and energetic freshmen and upperclassmen.
“I just think we’re such a different team this year,” Abrahamson-Henderson said. “Everyone wants to do well. You can see how balanced the scoring is too. You can see what our team energy is like; Summer came off the bench, and everybody is excited for Summer to be scoring. The team has chemistry.”
Next up, the Georgia Lady Bulldogs will face Georgia State on Thursday, Nov. 14 on their home court at 6 p.m.
