The Georgia women’s golf team fired a 9-over 297 to grab the first-round lead after round one of the 36-hole Pirate Invitational at Trump National Golf Course on Thursday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Individually, the Bulldogs’ Manuela Carbajo Ré is tied for second and Harang Lee and Rocio Sanchez Lobato are both tied for fourth.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia and Princeton put considerable distance on the rest of the teams in the field. The Bulldogs are three strokes ahead of the Tigers, with 15 shots between Princeton and third-place Columbia.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “It was another good day for us,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “We were able to continue the solid play from the Liz Murphey last weekend. We’re exactly where we want to be after day one with a chance to win our first team title of the year tomorrow. If we play tomorrow like we have the past four rounds, I think we’ll be in good shape.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia finished second at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic last weekend, defeating No. 3 South Carolina and No. 9 Northwestern before falling to No. 1 Southern Cal in the championship of the match play event.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Carbajo Ré posted an even-par 72, while Lee and Sanchez Lobato both signed for 73s. The Bulldogs also counted a 79 from Sylvie Brick and dropped Sammi Lee’s 82. Amira Alexander, who is competing as an individual, posted a 78.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Carbajo Ré is three shots off the pace of Camilla Vik of Columbia. Alexander is tied for 16th, Brick is tied for 18th and Sammi Lee is tied for 37th.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “It’s nice when you click on the individual leaderboard and you see ‘T-2nd’ and two at ‘T-4th.’ There isn’t much separation before you see a ‘T-16th’ and ‘T-18th.’ It was a very strong showing individually. We had three players who at one point today were between 1-under and 4-under. That’s always a good sign.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Carbajo Ré turned at 1-under. On the front side, she bogeyed No. 3 but gained that stroke back immediately with a birdie at No. 4 and moved into red numbers with another birdie at No. 8. Carbajo Ré was actually 4-under through 14 after birdies at No. 10, No. 12 and No. 14, but closed with a bogey at No. 15, another at No. 17 and a double-bogey at No. 18.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs and Tigers will be paired together for Friday’s final round, which will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
