Georgia continued preparation for Vanderbilt on Wednesday as the offense went through practice with increased intensity. Coaches pushed the players to the next level and Wednesday’s practice proved to be the toughest yet. After two short periods here are my two takeaways from practice.
Coley Urges Wideouts to Improve:
James Coley always has things to say during practice, however, Wednesday proved to be special. The coach said the f-bomb about eight times before I lost count and he laid into each receiver until they performed to his standard. He targeted Mecole Hardman and Jayson Stanley in particular. Coley told Hardman, “Get your eyes on it Mecole!!” Then he told Stanely, “Jayson what the [explicit] is wrong with you?” Coley took no nonsense on Wednesday and made sure none of his players gave him any.
There were fewer balls dropped during Wednesday’s practice, but still too many for comfort. However, Ahkil Crumpton continues to shine in practice and he caught literally everything thrown at him. He attempted to get two feet in on a close pass, but the assistant ruled him out of bounds.
Despite Coley’s critiques, the wideout group looks ready for the challenge that is before them on Saturday. None of the guys joked around, and they all looked to be executing at near 100 percent.
Quarterback Battle Continues:
Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason continue to battle for the starting quarterback position. It appears Fromm is taking reps with the first team while Eason the second, but the competition is there. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney praised the two and told them they were off to a great start to the day.
Both guys were on the money today and made crisp accurate throws. Eason just towers over Fromm and its hard to believe he is that big, but when you stand him next to Fromm, it shows. The sophomore shows no weakness as the two worked on rollouts and various other throwing routes. It appears he is almost 100 percent healthy and it’ll be interesting to see how the competition plays out. Georgia is definitely a better with a healthy Eason and Fromm pushing each other.
Bits and Pieces:
The Bulldogs continued a high-intensity practice and the coaches demanded perfection from the players. The guys gave the coaches just that. Georgia’s offense looked ready for the challenge on Saturday and it’ll be interesting to see how the quarterback situation plays out. There was a guest at practice, former Bulldog offensive lineman Tyler Catalina, who is now with the Washington Redskins, was there watching the offensive line and just looked happy to be there. There were some scout from the Jacksonville Jaguar and New Orleans Saints in attendance as well.
