The No. 5 Georgia softball team (36-5) shut out the Georgia State Panthers (20-19) 7-0 Wednesday evening at Jack Turner Stadium.
 
 
Mary Wilson Avant (3-1) started the game pitching five scoreless innings surrendering only two hits. In relief, Amanda Ablan pitched the final two innings for Georgia completing the shutout for the Bulldogs. With the injury of Brittany Gray, the team is now becoming more dependent on strong pitching performances from Wilson and the others in rotation.
 
 
The bats got started quickly as Justice Milz blasted a two-run homer scoring Cortni Emmanuel. Justice Milz had a three-hit night, along with Cortni Emmanuel and Ciara Bryan with two apiece.
 
 
Georgia would go on to score a single run in the third inning on an Alysen Febrey double to left center knocking in Milz. The last four runs scored by the Bulldogs were steered by a three-hit inning in the fourth.
 
 

 
 
Jordan Doggett singled up the middle scoring a run and Milz recorded her third RBI on the night on a fielders choice by bringing in Armistead. Alyssa DiCarlo added more insurance for Georgia hitting a two-RBI single to right center to close the inning.
 
 
“I thought it was a good effort by the girls,” assistant head coach Tony Baldwin said. “We had a really good practice day yesterday and came out today with a really good mindset. I thought it was really important Mary got us off to a really good start. We made some good plays on defense, and Cortni and Justice got us going there and gave us some momentum. From there, we played pretty good softball on the way out.”
 
 
Next, Georgia will host Mercer this upcoming weekend for a three-game series. The action starts Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. in Jack Turner Stadium and will be a double-header.
