Georgia softball currently sits at 21-6 with a 2-4 record in conference play. The Bulldogs rank 11th in the SEC. With the addition of Oklahoma and Texas, the conference has grown substantially stronger. Oklahoma and Texas both sit as the top two teams in the country. In addition, the Sooners are coming off of four straight NCAA championships. Thankfully for the Bulldogs, they are not set to face either Oklahoma or Texas in the regular season.

Back in late February, head coach Tony Baldwin spoke with the media after a 5-4 comeback win over Appalachian State.

“I mean, this league is tough, and it’s a grind every day,” said Baldwin. “And hopefully, you know, what we’re learning is how to manage that.”

13 SEC teams are listed in the NCAA’s top 25 ranking.

Georgia has played in two SEC series thus far, against Tennessee and South Carolina. The Bulldogs won one of three against both opponents. Tennessee and South Carolina are ranked in the top 10 of the NCAA.

Lefty Lilli Backes has the most innings pitched on the roster. The senior LHP was listed on the 2025 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year watchlist prior to the commencement of the season. Backes has a 9-2 record with a 2.22 ERA. Georgia’s five pitchers average a 2.22 ERA as a unit as well.

On the offensive side, the team has a .294 batting average. Jaydyn Goodwin and Sarah Gordon have been deadly at the plate. Goodwin and Gordon each have over 80 plate appearances with at least a .346 average. Both have some of the highest on base percentages on the team and are tied for first in home runs with six.

The team is improving daily, whether or not it shows up in the stats, according to coach Baldwin.

“What I hope people see is that this young group has got some great personality and some competitiveness, and they’re getting better,” said Baldwin. “You know, every day, it doesn’t always show up in their batting average yet and some of the process, but they’re getting better every day.”

The Bulldogs’ scoring has been in a bit of a slump in March. The team scored just 28 runs in the last 10 games, compared to 78 runs in the 10 games prior.

This week, the Bulldogs have a non-conference home game on Wednesday against Georgia State before fourth-ranked LSU comes to town for a three-game series. Winning this series will be crucial in helping Georgia climb the ranks in its stacked conference. The Tigers opened up SEC play last weekend with a series against Kentucky and came away from Baton Rouge with a sweep.

Tune in to ESPN+ on the SEC Network at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19th, to watch Georgia face Georgia State.
