Georgia Softball Loses Game one Against Gamecocks after Costly Fifth Inning

A new pitcher and four runs later, Georgia lost all momentum at the top of the fifth and allowed South Carolina to come back and win 7-5. Despite a momentous start, the Bulldogs couldn’t finish due to errors and leaving nine runners stranded.

Kylie Bass started for the Bulldogs as she pitched four innings. She struck out five batters and allowed two hits and two runs. Brittany Gray relieved Bass in the top of the fifth as the pitched the last three innings of the game. She took the loss after she allowed five runs, three earned on four hits and three walks. Gray record goes to 17-9 on the season.
 
 
Georgia held a 3-2 lead after the first three innings after the Gamecocks hit a pair of home runs to keep it close. However, the Bulldogs increased their lead in the fourth after a two-RBI single from Alyssa DiCarlo which made it 5-2.

The Gamecocks erased the lead in the next frame as they scored four runs to give them the 6-5 lead. After such a strong start, the fifth inning drained any momentum Georgia had and went scoreless the final three innings. South Carolina pushed its lead to 7-5 in the sixth after an error by Gray.

However, despite losing Georgia outhit the Gamecocks 12-6. Cortni Emanuel went 4-for-4 and scored two runs and a pair of stolen bases. DiCarlo tabbed two hits and recorded three RBI. Brea Dickey also contributed a pair of hits.
 
 
The series continues on Saturday as the teams face off at 2 p.m. Georgia will honor its seniors before the game.
