The Bulldog track and field teams came away with a series of personal bests to highlight the opening day of the Doc Hale VT Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Va., on Friday evening.
[break] [break] “We had an OK night of competition with a lot of season bests and personal bests,” said Bulldog head coach Wayne Norton. “Our milers, 800 runners and weight throwers improved at this meet. One of the highlights was Devon Williams in the 60 hurdles. His 7.89 was a nice improvement. It was not a spectacular night but we made a lot of progress and continue to show signs of potential.”
[break] [break] Holding the national lead in the pentathlon, sophomore Kendell Williams matched her personal-best time in the 60-meter hurdles of 8.21 to win in the finals with the country’s eighth-best time this year. This time equaled her No. 2 time in school history that was registered at last year’s NCAA Championships on the way to her collegiate record in the pentathlon.
[break] [break] Senior pentathlete Quintunya Chapman also finished with a career best in the 60 hurdle prelims with an 8.43. This improved her No. 7 time in the school record books. Chapman returned to take seventh in the finals with an 8.44.
[break] [break] Kendell Williams’ older brother, sophomore heptathlete Devon Williams, also left the Rector Fieldhouse with the fastest time of his career in the 60 hurdles. He ran a 7.89, which improved his No. 4 time in the Bulldog record books and moved him into the nation’s top 25, to take third in the event finals.
[break] [break] Also of note, junior heptathlete Garrett Scantling, who leads the nation in the multi-events, was sixth in the 60 hurdle finals with an 8.03 while fellow junior heptathlete Maicel Uibo, who stands second nationally in the heptathlon, was 13th in the event’s prelims with an 8.45.

Sophomore Alex Poursanidis had four throws of 66 feet or more, which all would have been career bests, and topped out at a third attempt of 66 feet, 9 ¾ inches. Sophomore Alex Larsson made nearly a four-foot improvement from his season opener and finished 12th with a personal-best throw of 60-10.75.
