Georgia track and field true freshmen Lynna Irby and Tara Davis have earned weekly Southeastern Conference weekly awards following their performances at the Razorback Invitational over the weekend, according to a league announcement.
 

Irby, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., was named the Women’s Co-Runner of the Week while Davis, a native of Agoura Hills, Calif., garnered Women’s Freshman of the Week honors. This marks the first weekly conference honor for both of the Georgia women.

Thanks in part to the contributions of Irby and Davis, the Lady Bulldogs bumped up a spot to No. 2 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll.

Irby made her collegiate debut in the 200-meter dash and clocked a national and world-leading time of 22.96 to top a 22-year-old school record (Debbie Ferguson, 23.17, 1996). Irby’s time was the fastest for a collegiate freshman before the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2012.

Irby returned to the Randal Tyson Track Center and registered a national and world-leading 400m time of 51.48 to shoot to No. 2 in the UGA record books behind 2016 gold medalist Shaunae Miller. This time was the fastest for a collegiate freshman before the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2014.

Davis equaled her collegiate personal best of 21 feet, 1 ¼ inches to take second in the long jump between NCAA powers and teammates Kate Hall and Keturah Orji. She had five jumps of 20-1 or better in her series. Davis remains fourth on the national list (top freshman) and eighth on the school’s all-time top-10 list.

The Bulldogs return to Clemson, S.C., for the third time this indoor season as they are scheduled to compete in the Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb. 9-10. The SEC Indoor Championships will arrive in College Station, Texas, on Feb. 23-24 before the NCAA Indoor Championships are in the same location on March 9-10.
