Georgia vs Alabama: Walkoff Single by Anna Swafford Splits Softball Doubleheader

[su_spacer size=”20″] Anna Swafford’s walk off single sealed No. 8/8 Georgia’s dramatic 7-6 win in game two over No. 5/5 Alabama in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, March 14 at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Ga. The Bulldogs dropped the first game of the day 7-4 in nine innings before getting the come-from-behind win in game two. Georgia is now 24-4 on the year and 3-2 in Southeastern Conference play. Alabama is 19-4 overall and 4-1 in the SEC. The Bulldogs now own a 2-1 record over top-5 teams this season.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Paige Wilson was red hot at the plate, going 4-for-7 with a run scored. Sydni Emanuel finished with three hits and scored three runs on the day. Alex Hugo led the team with three RBI on the day with a trio of sacrifice flies, including the game-tying RBI in the nightcap. Swafford finished with two hits, including a solo home run in game one and a walk off single in game two.

[su_spacer size=”20″] Trailing 6-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Georgia showed off its flair for dramatics to pull off the 7-6 come-from-behind win. Georgia sent the top of the order to plate in the home half of the seventh. The first three batters reached before Hugo sent the tying run home on a sacrifice fly to right. Swafford sealed Georgia’s victory with a walk off single off the left field wall.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Brittany Gray got her 10th win of the season to remain undefeated with the complete-game performance. She allowed six runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits. She also struck out four batters. Alabama’s Sydney Littlejohn suffered her first loss of the year to fall to 8-1. She threw two innings of relief, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk. Leslie Jury got the start, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits and walk. She also struck out five. Alexis Osorio allowed one run on one hit in relief.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Alabama struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In the bottom of the fourth, Georgia loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a hit batter.  With two outs, a passed ball allowed Sydni to cross the plate. On the same play, Wilson came home after the throw from the catcher to home sailed wide, giving Georgia a 3-1 lead.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Alabama took a 6-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a pair of Georgia errors and a two run home run by Marisa Runyon.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia chipped away at the Alabama lead and got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-4. Katie Collins led off with a single to right before Samantha LaZear drew a walk to put runner at second and third. With two and no outs, S. Emanuel doubled to center, scoring Collins from second. One play later, LaZear was able to race home on a wild pitch that cut the lead to 6-4.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Kaylee Puailoa cut the lead to 6-5 with a two out, pinch hit home run, her second home run of the year, to right field in the bottom of the sixth.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The defense was spectacular in the top of the fifth, as Georgia faced the minimum after a 6-4-3 double play ended the inning. Down by one and down to its last three outs, the Bulldogs sent the top of the order to plate. The first three batters reached on a Cortni Emanuel single, a walk by S. Emanuel and a bunt single by Wilson. With the bases loaded and no outs, Hugo stepped in a delivered a long fly ball to right that allowed C. Emanuel to tag and score the tying run. Swafford stepped in and took the 0-1 pitch off the wall for the game-winning single that sealed the 7-6 Georgia victory.

[su_spacer size=”20″] Georgia suffered a 7-4 loss in the first game of the doubleheader.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Chelsea Wilkinson (13-4) got the start and threw a complete game. She allowed seven runs on 12 hits and two walks. She also struck out four batters. Osorio (7-2) earned the win in the complete-game performance. She allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and struck out eight batters.
[su_spacer size=”40″] C. Emanuel got things started in the top of the first by reaching on an Alabama fielding error. With runners on the corners after a Wilson bunt single, Hugo sent C. Emanuel home on a sacrifice fly that put Georgia up 1-0.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In the top of the third, Alabama tied the game at 1-1 on a RBI fielder’s choice by Chandler Dare.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia responded in the bottom of the third to retake the lead at 3-1. After a pair of infield singles, LaZear and C. Emanuel scored on a single by Wilson and sacrifice fly by Hugo.
[su_spacer size=”40″] After a two run home run by Leona Lafaele tied the game in the top of the fourth, Swafford belted a towering home run of her own over the trees in left field to put the Bulldogs on top 4-3.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Crimson Tide scored the next four runs to take the lead and eventually seal the win. Alabama knotted the score at 4-4 in the seventh on a RBI-single that sent the game to extra innings before getting three runs in the top of the ninth.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia looks to get its second-straight SEC series win tomorrow, March 15th at 2 p.m., at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Ga. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
