Georgia (18-15, 5-7 SEC) has four road games this week starting with Clemson (16-15) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and then it’s back to SEC action against Alabama (15-15, 4-8 SEC) Friday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs have been streaky this year and look to snap a five-game losing streak. Georgia saw a three-game winning streak snap at seventh-ranked South Carolina on March 29 and last week dropped a midweek contest to Ga. Tech and was swept by No. 1 Vanderbilt this past weekend in Athens. The Alabama series will be played at Hoover (Ala.) Metropolitan Stadium as the Crimson Tide’s home field is under renovation this season.
[su_spacer size=”40″] On a positive note, Georgia is 5-1 on the road in the SEC this year, sweeping Tennessee (March 20-22) and winning the aforementioned series with the Gamecocks (March 27-29), its first in Columbia since 1994. Clemson won an ACC home series over North Carolina this past weekend while Alabama was swept by nationally ranked LSU in Hoover including falling in a pair of extra inning contests, one that went 16 innings.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia, under the direction of coach Scott Stricklin, is batting .277 with 28 home runs while the Bulldogs have a 4.39 ERA and are fielding .969. For the last month, the Bulldogs have been without their No. 1 starter (Robert Tyler – forearm strain) and No. 3 starter (David Sosebee – back) plus two relievers in senior Taylor Hicks and sophomore Drew Moody. However, Sosebee (2-1, 1.80 ERA, 20IP, 22K, 8BB) may return Tuesday as part of a staff night at Clemson. The Bulldogs hope to get Tyler (1-0, 3.86 ERA, 14IP, 22K, 6 BB) and Hicks (0-0, 1.23 ERA, 14.2IP, 13K, 3BB) back later this month too.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Senior LHP/1B Jared Walsh (3-0, 1.82 ERA; .306-2-17) is one of the top two-way talents in the SEC and among the ERA leaders. In SEC action, Walsh is 1-0 with a 2.49 ERA in four appearances including three starts while batting a team-best .295-1-7. Currently, Walsh has a five-game hitting streak. He hit .556 (5-for-9) in two starts against the top-ranked Commodores. He made the Sunday start on the mound and went six innings, allowing just one run on two hits with five strikeouts. He was in line for a victory, leaving with a 3-1 lead but the Commodores rallied back off the Bulldog bullpen. The other two SEC starting pitchers for the Bulldogs recently have been junior Ryan Lawlor (3-4, 3.46 ERA) and junior Sean McLaughlin (3-2, 5.49 ERA). Senior Jared Cheek (2-1, 2.53 ERA, 4 SV) has been the most consistent reliever and ranks among the SEC leaders in appearances with 16. Cheek pitched 3.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in the series versus #1 VU.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Sophomore centerfielder Stephen Wrenn (.321-4-17) has reached base safely in all 33 games this season. He leads the SEC in stolen base with 17 this year. This past Sunday, he saw his career-best 11-game hitting streak end, and during that stretch, he batted .333 (16-for-48). For his career, Wrenn is batting .279-4-37 with 33 SB. Junior 1B/DH Daniel Nichols hit .375 (3-for-8) with 5 RBI and 3 walks in the VU series.

The Tigers jumped on Jared Walsh, scoring three runs in the first and put the game out of reach with a seven-run outburst in the fifth off the Bulldog bullpen in front of a crowd of 2,147 at Foley Field. Walsh got the loss while Clate Schmidt went six innings for a win. At the plate, the Tigers were led by Steven Duggar (4-for-6, 4 RBI) while Tyler Slaton, Shane Kennedy and Weston Wilson all drove in a pair of runs. Stephen Wrenn had two RBI for Georgia.

Patrick Boling provided 7.2 strong innings and Hunter Cole went 3-for-5 with four RBI to help the Bulldogs earn a split in the season series in front of a Tiger crowd of 4,260. Brody Koerner started for Clemson and was chased in the second during a four-run outburst that provided a 5-0 lead.

Georgia junior third baseman Trevor Kieboom (.238-1-9) began his career at Clemson in 2012 but never appeared in a game due to injuries. His brother, Spencer, was a standout for the Tigers and fifth round draft pick of the Nationals in 2012. Trevor has appeared in 23 games with 22 starts for the Bulldogs this season.

Georgia senior RHP Zach Waters (1-0, 5.94 ERA) was a teammate of Clemson’s projected starter Jake Long in 2012 when both played for East Tennessee State. Waters has made 11 relief appearances for a total of 16.2 innings this year.
