[su_spacer size=”20″] Georgia Tech scored eight runs in the first three innings and went on to post a 13-6 win over No. 21 Georgia Tuesday at Foley Field in front of a crowd of 3,188.

 

The Bulldogs issued nine walks and made three errors to aid the Yellow Jackets (18-10) who won the first of three meetings this season against their rival. The teams next meet on Tech’s campus in Atlanta on April 14 and wrap up the series on May 12 at Turner Field.

Georgia freshman starter Ryan Avidano lasted 2.2 innings and received the loss, surrendering eight runs, six earned on five hits and four walks. Avidano’s record fell to 3-2 on the season.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Despite the loss, the Georgia offense did show some flashes Tuesday. Stephen Wrenn, Skyler Weber, Jared Walsh, Mike Bell and Nick King all had two hits. Weber and King each had two RBI, while Walsh had an RBI of his own. Wrenn had a leadoff triple in the first to extend his on base streak to all 30 games this season.

 

Half of Georgia’s ten hits came in the second inning, when the Bulldogs scored five runs. It was the Bulldogs’ 11th time scoring four or more runs in an inning this season. However, Tech came right back to score three runs with the help of a couple of miscues to build an 8-5 advantage.

 

“We continue to walk too many batters, the other day we walked 15 and still won but you can’t keep doing that plus we had three errors that led to four unearned runs tonight, and it was right after we had a chance to get the momentum back,” Georgia coach Scott Stricklin said. “Georgia Tech took advantage of our mistakes and made some nice plays in the field and didn’t make any errors.”

 

A couple of bright spots out of the Bulldog bullpen were sophomore Bo Tucker who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and freshman Max Ford made a solid debut. He inherited a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and registered a strikeout. He tossed the final 1.1 innings, blanking Tech. Ford had seen action in five games as an infielder.

 

Georgia Tech scored 13 runs on 13 hits. Left fielder Matt Gonzalez paced the attack, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Reliever Matt Phillips picked up the win improving his record to 3-0 on the campaign.

 

Georgia (18-12, 5-4 SEC) returns to action Friday night at 7:05 p.m. as they play host to #1 ranked Vanderbilt (22-6, 7-2 SEC).
