For all of the goals Georgia had prior to the season, and the ones that have been accomplished, the most important one is on the line Saturday against Tech on The Flats – the State Championship.

 

Now, 10-1 on the season, this game for the state pride is a de facto national semifinal game, as the Bulldogs have everything to play for. Tech is fighting for a bowl berth, and aiming to spoil Georgia’s season.

Georgia struggled early against Kentucky, plagued by a costly turnover and penalties. But the Bulldogs took a 21-6 halftime lead, and after the Wildcats cut it to 21-13, Georgia scored the final three touchdowns of the day to win 42-13. The victory over the Wildcats capped Georgia’s first perfect home season since 2012 and first undefeated mark against the Southeastern Conference East Division for the first time since the league split into divisions in 1992.

Tech is eyeing a second straight win over the Bulldogs and three of the last four, as the Yellow Jackets try and beat Georgia at Grant Field for the first time since 1999 and the infamous Jasper Sanks/ Al Ford “fumble call.”The Bulldogs have won eight straight against Tech in Atlanta and 12 of the last 13.

At 5-5 on the year, the Yellow Jackets suffered a surprising 43- 20 loss at Duke this past week. The game was tied 20-20 at the half, then Duke dominated the second half. This has been a year of near misses for the talented Yellow Jackets. A fourth-quarter fumble proved costly in a 42-41 Labor Day Night Overtime loss to Tennessee – a game that Tech dominated on the ground. The Yellow Jackets were also zeroed in on a win over second-ranked Miami, but the Hurricanes rallied late to win 25-24 in South Florida. In a 40-36 loss at Virginia, the Jackets led in the closing minutes.

Tech’s defense hung tough with defending national champion Clemson in the rain in Death Valley, where the Yellow Jackets lost 24-10.

Due to the hurricane, Tech’s game with Central Florida was cancelled, so this will be its 11th game of the year. Though the record doesn’t show it, the Bulldogs are well aware that this fight will be against a team the caliber of an 8-2 type record.

For the Georgia faithful, this has undoubtedly been one of the most enjoyable seasons ever. Those seniors, especially Sony Michel and Nick Chubb, who returned for their senior years, and the sons and daughters of the Red and Black are hungry to cap the regular season in grand fashion in the biggest game of them all.
