GAME NOTES
LAST TIME OUT: GEORGIA TECH
Georgia flexed its muscle over in-state rival Georgia Tech, finishing off the series sweep with a 15-0 win in five innings on Wednesday. Bulldogs put up 13 hits against the Yellow Jackets, including four home runs with Tina Iosefa and Alex Hugo adding two each. Iosefa had a career-best seven RBI thanks to a grand slam while Hugo led the team with a 3-for-4 effort. Chelsea Wilkinson and Kylie Bass worked a perfect five innings in the circle. Wilkinson threw the first four frames, striking out seven of the 12 batters faced. Bass finished off the Jackets, striking out one in the last inning.
This year’s senior class went 8-0 against the Jackets during their career, outscoring them 95-10.
CORTNI NAMED TOP 25 FINALIST FOR USA SOFTBALL POY Award
After earning a spot as Top 10 Freshman of the Year last season, Cortni Emanuel was named a Top 25 Finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year, the organization announced Wednesday. A NFCA All-American last year, Emanuel is already placing her name in the Georgia record books. The sophomore is sixth in stolen bases, going 72-for-77 in her career, while earlier this season she broke the school record with a 23-game hitting streak.
Emanuel is one of five sophomores named to the list while one of seven from the SEC. It’s the sixth time in program history that a Bulldog has been among the top 25, as the prestigious honor is now in its 15th year of existence. Just prior to the start of postseason play, the list will be narrowed to the Top 10 Finalists on May 11. The Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 25, while the winner of the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be revealed on May 31 prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS in Oklahoma City.
DICARLO NAMED SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
For the third time this season, Alyssa DiCarlo earned the SEC Freshman of the Week after hitting .643 in last week’s four games with nine hits, including three home runs in the sweep of Missouri. She had multi-hit performances in all four games, including a 3-for-3 effort in game two at Missouri where she hit a career-best two home runs in the game. The Arizona native finished the weekend’s sweep in Columbia with a .700 average, going 7-for-10 with six RBI and a 1.600 slugging percentage. DiCarlo’s third weekly honor is the most of any player this season in the league.
HUGO, IOSEFA WITH PAIR OF HOME RUNS AT TECH
Hugo and Iosefa each notched a pair of home runs in Georgia’s 15-0 win at Tech. Closing out their time playing the rival, Hugo ended it with five home runs while Iosefa has hit seven against Tech in her eight games played. It was the second time this season Hugo had two home runs in a game, doing so against Austin Peay as well, while the fourth in her career. For Iosefa, it was the third time this season with two against Charleston Southern and the first game against the Jackets, making it six times in her career.
Georgia has hit 12 home runs since game one at Mizzou, as Hugo and Iosefa have hit seven of those. Both seniors are also catching up to Alisa Goler’s all-time home run record of 58. Hugo now holds 55 at Georgia while Iosefa follows with 48.
PERFECTION IN THE CIRCLE AT TECH
Wilkinson and Bass combined for a perfect game in Wednesday’s win at Georgia Tech. Wilkinson threw four of the five frames, striking out seven, while Bass finished the Jackets off in the fifth with two flyouts and a strikeout. It’s the 10th perfect game in school history and the first no-hitter against the in-state foe. The game marked the third perfect outing of Wilkinson’s career, as she had a perfect complete game against UAB in February.
