It’s the second of three consecutive home games for Georgia to close out the regular season, as the Bulldogs take on the Minutemen from the University of Massachusetts.
This matchup comes after eight straight Southeastern Conference contests for the Bulldogs. It’s a bit of “buffer” game. Georgia opened the season with a victory over Atlantic Coast Conference power Clemson, national champions in 2016 and 2018. Then came a tuneup with Tennessee Tech prior to the gauntlet of the octet of SEC battles.
Georgia is coming off a tremendous 31-17 victory over Tennessee, which improved the Bulldogs to 8-2 on the season and wrapped up Southeastern Conference play at 6-2. The Bulldogs have now won eight straight over the Volunteers, and have extended the school record home winning streak to 29 games. It’s the longest active home winning streak in college football.
Waiting on deck is a talented bunch of Yellow Jackets. Brent Key has assembled the best team on the Flats since at least Paul Johnson’s last team in 2018.
UMass is an independent, but will be moving into the Mid American conference next season. The Minutemen come in with a record of 2-8.
Since falling 45-3 at Missouri, the Minutemen have been playing much better over their last three games. UMass took down Wagner 35-7 at home in Amherst on October 26. Then came the second of three SEC games for the Minutemen. UMass hung tough with Mississippi State, before falling to the Maroon Bulldogs 45-20 in Starkville.
Last week, UMass showed continued improvement, falling in a 35-34 overtime heartbreaker to Liberty, which has been a mid major power at McGuirk Stadium, the Minutemen’s home field. Jalen John scored on a two-yard touchdown run in the extra period, but UMass did not convert the extra point. Liberty then answered with a touchdown and extra point to win.
Wide receiver Jakobie Keene-James is the Minutemen’s top offensive threat, with 42 catches for 670 yards and four touchdowns, with a long of 64.
This will be the second ever meeting between Georgia and UMass. The Bulldogs beat the Minutemen 66-27 in a similar spot on the schedule, after the SEC finale and prior to the game with the Yellow Jackets. In a losing performance, UMass receiver Andy Isabella had a tremendous performance with 219 yards on 15 catches with a pair of touchdowns. Jake Fromm completed five of five passes for the Bulldogs.
