Can the Bulldogs keep it rolling?
Vanderbilt is in the midst of one of the toughest stretches of schedule of any team in America. The Commodores surged to 3-0 on the season with a 14-7 victory over Kansas State, one of the best teams in the Big XII. Then came a visit from SEC kingpin Alabama. The Crimson Tide played a near perfect game in a 59-0 rout of the Commodores. Vandy then went toe to toe with Florida, before the Gators pulled away 38-24.
Now comes Georgia.
For a third straight season, the Bulldogs raced to a 24-0 first-half lead against Tennessee. This Bulldog team, certainly with plenty of ammo in the memory bank and an easy halftime talk from head coach Kirby Smart, put up a decisive, historically impressive 41-0 victory over the Volunteers.
Georgia must have its focus for the Commodores. After playing in front of raucous crowds the last two weeks with huge stakes, it will be the early 11:00 a.m. Central time kickoff from Music City USA.
The Bulldogs are on a roll unlike any since the early to mid-2000s. Even some of those outstanding Georgia teams didn’t have performances like the two that the Bulldogs hung on then No. 17 Mississippi State and Tennessee.
Make no mistake, as superbly as Georgia played on Rocky Top, the Bulldogs did get a couple of breaks and bounces. Great teams capitalize on those.
While last Saturday’s victory over the Volunteers was easy motivation after what has happened the last two years, same story for this week. With the early kick, Smart won’t need to remind his team too much or too often what went down between the hedges last year when the Bulldogs season was jolted with a 17-16 Vanderbilt upset win. This Bulldogs squad is checking off a lot of boxes, and handling success as a road favorite against a team that Georgia lost to last year will again be put to the test.
For Georgia, the future is bright, and the future is now. Vanderbilt will try and spoil what is shaping up as a special season for the red and black.
