Two doubles wins and two singles wins by the fourth-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team capped the round robin Bulldog Classic with Georgia State Sunday early afternoon at the Lindsey Hopkins Tennis Complex in ATHENS, GA.
Freshman Annette Goulak added another singles win to join her two from Saturday and picked up a double victory to be the Bulldog Classic Champion. In doubles, Goulak paired with senior Kennedy Shaffer who also accounted for one of Sunday’s singles wins. Sophomore Elena Christofi and senior Mariana Gould represented the other Georgia win in doubles play.
“It is super early in he season and it is a long spring, but like I was saying yesterday, it goes fast so you have to take advantage of everyday and its good for us to get some matches in this early,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “I thought our players played well all weekend. The doubles looked good out here. I’m excited for Annette; she goes 3-0 and is the Bulldog Classic Champion so it was great for her. We all just need to work hard in practice to get ready for the kickoff weekend and make our way to the Team Indoors. That is our goal right now, to get to that event.”
The day started with the two doubles matches, each Bulldog duo raced out to a 3-1 lead, but yielded two games to be notched at 3-all. Shaffer and Goulak clamped down the rest of the way and defeated Georgia State’s Lara Vovk and Anastasia Grosheva, 6-3. The Panther twosome of Damira Muminovic and Elizabet Danailova down 4-5, tied it at 5-5 to force another game, but Christofi and Gould won out to take it 7-5.
After a brief break, singles commenced and the Bulldogs again got off to fast starts by all taking first sets. Shaffer blitzed Vovk, 6-0; Goulak went 6-1 over Grosheva, and freshman Vivian Wolff went ahead of Danailova 6-2.
In the second set, Goulak blanked Grosheva for the 6-1, 6-0 win, and Shaffer only dropped two games to pick up the 6-0, 6-2 victory from Vovk. Wolff fought back from 1-3 to 3-4, but dropped the second set 3-6, forcing a third set. Wolff jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set and last match still playing, but Danailova stormed back to win 6-4 and take the match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Bulldogs have a few weeks to practice and fine tune until they play host to the ITA Kickoff Weekend in which they welcome Michigan State, Furman and Pennsylvania to Athens. Georgia will play the Spartans of MSU Friday, Jan. 26, while the Paladins of FU and Quakers of Penn square off. The winners will face the following day for a ticket to the National Team Indoors in Madison, Wisconsin.
