The third-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team (17-2, 10-1) will conclude its regular season with a pair of home matches this weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, and they have some Gator and Chicken on the menu.
The Bulldogs will face No. 4 Florida on Friday at 5 p.m. and wrap up the weekend on Sunday against 11th-ranked South Carolina at 1 p.m.
A pair of wins this weekend would give UGA a share of the SEC regular season championship.
“It’s a great opportunity for us,” said Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace. “We’ve worked extremely hard this whole year. Our players are fired up. I just feel like we’re waiting for Friday at 5 to get here. It’s going to be a great week of practice, and hopefully we’ll have a lot of people here supporting these guys. It’s going to be fun.”
The team is coming off a successful weekend with a two wins on the road, beating No. 16 LSU and No. 18 Texas A&M by identical 5-2 scores. Georgia took advantage of two wins from both Ellen Perez and Laura Patterson in singles play, as the sophomores remained undefeated in SEC play.
Perez climbed to No. 4 in the latest ITA poll, leading the way for the four ranked Bulldogs. Kennedy Shaffer also claimed her best spring ranking, checking in at No. 46, five spots ahead of where she was a week ago.
Georgia will also utilize two ranked doubles pairs – Perez and Mariana Gould at 20 and Silvia Garcia and Shaffer at 67.
Friday’s match will be a blackout, and fans are encouraged to don black clothing in support of the team’s efforts against Florida. Sunday will be senior day, with the team honoring Garcia for her four years in Athens.
