GYM: Georgia Posts Season-High 197.525 in Win Over Utah

No. 8 University of Georgia gymnastics team defeated No. 6 Utah with a season-best score of 197.525 over the Utes’ 197.450 on Saturday at Stegeman Coliseum.

This marks the sixth score of 197.000 or better this season for the GymDogs, which is the most since 2014.

The GymDogs honored their senior, Sydney Snead, in pre-meet celebrations. She completed regular season competition with all 9.900’s or better on vault.

“Today was a strong meet against a top-10 opponent and we achieved our season-high score,” Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. “Our goal has been to continue to be the Georgia GymDogs and build momentum. This was actually the first meet, oddly enough, that we haven’t had a fall within the meet. We have had meets where we didn’t count a fall, but this was one where they really stepped up as a team and that momentum is huge continuing one event to the next. This team really does have what it takes so it is just building that confidence and consistency through practice and competitions. They are really getting there as we head into postseason.”

Rachael Lukacs

Georgia started strong on vault, notching a new season-high score of 49.475. Freshman Rachael Lukacs scored her season-best 9.950 and Snead followed with a 9.900.  Mikayla Magee, Sabrina Vega and Rachel Dickson each scored a 9.875 for the GymDogs.

Marissa Oakley led the GymDogs on bars, scoring a 9.925.  Before her, Dickson scored a 9.875, followed by three 9.825’s from Alexa Al-Hameed, Snead, and Lukacs for a team 49.275 for the event.

Up next, the GymDogs head to New Orleans for the SEC Championship on Saturday, March 23. The bottom-seeded teams will compete in the afternoon session, before the top-four teams compete in the evening. The afternoon session, beginning at 2 p.m. ET, will be televised on the SEC Network, before flipping to ESPN2 for the evening session at 8 p.m. ET.
