The seventh-ranked University of Georgia gymnastics team landed the win over No. 13 Kentucky, 197.300- 197.225, in thrilling fashion after junior Sabrina Vega stuck a 9.975 on floor, on Friday night at Stegeman Coliseum.

“This was an exciting meet that really came down to the end,” Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said.  “Floor, started off a little bit slow. It was great to see Sami Davis start off for us. She has a really strong routine to get us started on that event. You can see the energy from the team when she did because she has been working so hard on those passes. Her first pass, the two and a half, which is absolutely gorgeous, that really set the tone for the next few competitors. Ending with those three athletes, Rachel Dickson, Rachael Lukacs, and Sabrina Vega, it’s a great ending to a floor lineup. You just see Luckas go, and her energy was totally invested into it. But, their landings were there. They really had solid landing today, and that is what got them their scores.”

The GymDogs (5-3, 3-3 SEC) began competition on vault, posting a 49.375. Senior Sydney Snead, junior Rachel Dickson, and freshman Rachael Lukacs each contributed a 9.900 for the event, followed by a 9.850 and 9.825 from Vega and freshman Abbey Ward, respectively. 

Georgia wowed the crowd on bars, swinging to a 49.475, marking the highest bars score under the direction of assistant coach Josh Overton. Freshman Alexa Al-Hameed led the GymDogs with a 9.950, with Snead and sophomore Marissa Oakley both earning 9.925’s.  Sophomore Emily Schild earned a 9.850 for her routine, followed by a 9.925 from freshman Megan Roberts. 

Vega led the GymDogs on beam, to match her career-high score of 9.925 contributing to the team’s score of 49.050.  Snead earned a 9.875, followed by a 9.925 from Oakley and a 9.800 from freshman Mikayla Magee. 

Four GymDogs scored career-high scores on floor, posting a 49.400 event total.  Vega’s 9.975, in the anchor position, secured the win for Georgia. Prior to Vega, Dickson earned a 9.950 to tighten the gap against the Wildcats. Rachael Lukacs earned her fourth 9.900 for the event. Sami Davis and Rachel Baumann contributed scores of 9.775 and 9.800, respectively. 

Georgia hits the road to face Florida on Friday, Feb. 22.  Freshman Rachel Baumann will be competing against her sister Alyssa for the first time. Alyssa is a sophomore gymnast at Florida.
