The Georgia Gymdog’s posted a 196.850 in the first session of the SEC championship that topped the first round of competition was good for fifth among all participants in the SEC Championship at North Little Rock’s Verizon Arena on Saturday.
The second-ranked Florida Gators took home the top score with a 197.775. Immediately following was No. 4 Alabama with a 197.750 and third-ranked LSU with a 197.500. The Auburn Tigers, ranked sixth, entered the final event with a narrow lead on the eighth-ranked Gymdogs, and they finished ahead by a thin margin of .125.
Georgia still showed on the leaderboard as senior Brandie Jay finished tied for first on the vault with a 9.95, joined by Alabama’s Mackenzie Brannan and Florida’s Kennedy Baker. Jay also finished tied for third among all contestants in the all-around with her score of a 39.575, her highest ever outside of Stegeman Coliseum.
Fellow senior Mary Beth Box, who led on the floor through the first session, finished in a tie for third with her 9.925, falling only behind Ashleigh Gnat of LSU who scored a perfect 10 and the Crimson Tide’s Kiana Winston, who got a 9.95.
Rachel Schick, who pulled a 9.9 on bars in the morning session to top the early contestants, and her impressive mark finished tied for seventh among all contestants at the SEC Championship.
Brittany Rogers also was recognized for finishing in a four-way tie for a fourth-place finish on vault with a 9.0.
The Gymdogs return home to host the NCAA Southeast regional on Saturday, April 2 at Stegeman Coliseum.
