Heather Stepp McCormick, one of the most decorated gymnasts in Georgia history, has been named Director of Gymnastics Administration by first-year UGA head coach Courtney Kupets Carter.
McCormick will be responsible for administrative and logistical matters within day-to-day operations, including on-campus recruiting activities, budget development, alumni relations, and liaison to other Athletic Association departments.
“Heather is a perfect fit for this position,” Kupets Carter said. “She knows everything about our program, and she can be a critical player in us achieving our vision and being successful at the SEC and NCAA levels. Heather has a great relationship with our alums and she will connect in the same way with our current student-athletes and our recruits. She has a diverse athletic, educational and professional background, so she can help us in key areas.”
McCormick won the NCAA vault championships in 1992 and 1993 and she claimed the NCAA floor exercise title in 1993. She was chosen as the 1993 Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Year (the first in school history). McCormick also won the 1992 Honda Inspiration Award after overcoming a serious elbow injury.
She was a member of the 1993 national championship squad and helped the 1991, 1992 and 1993 teams claim SEC titles. McCormick was a 9-time All-America and twice earned First-Team All-SEC distinction.
McCormick was inducted into UGA’s Circle of Honor in 2006 and into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
McCormick earned three degrees from UGA: a bachelor’s in Accounting (1994), a master’s in Sport Management (1996) and a doctorate in Sport Management and Policy (2014).
“I am very excited for the opportunity to join Courtney’s staff and become a member of her team,” McCormick said. “I have a passion for the development of the total student-athlete as it pertains to a successful transition into career and a life after sports. This opportunity allows me to give back to the program that has given so much to me.”
McCormick has served as the Regional Director of Development for UGA since 2012. She held previous roles within the Athletic Association as Career Development Program Consultant and Assistant Director of Development.
