NORMAN, Okla. — The fifth-ranked Georgia gymnastics team posted a 195.300 against the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Friday night at Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners scored a 197.825 to take the win.
“We underperformed tonight,” Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. “We had a great start at home last week and we started off with a fall today. Then we repeated with another one and that tightened everyone up throughout the competition. As much as you try to tell them to let that go and move on to the next event, they held on to it, so we have a lot of work to do. We have high expectations and this team has the potential. Our young team has to learn very quickly. I’m proud of our performance on vault. It was amazing to bounce back from bars like that, but we can’t just do that on one event.”
The GymDogs (1-1) started slow on bars, posting a 48.250, while the Sooners (2-0) scored a 49.500 on vault. Marissa Oakley led Georgia with a 9.9 in the anchor position and Rachel Dickson scored a 9.800 before her.
Georgia looked strong on vault, posting a 49.300 for the event. Five GymDogs improved their vault scores from last week’s season opener, and freshman Mikayla Magee made her vault lineup debut scoring a 9.800 in the lead off position. Fellow freshman Abbey Ward matched that score. Juniors Sabrina Vega and Rachel Dickson scored a paired of 9.825’s and the momentum continued from there. SEC Freshman of the Week Rachael Lukacs earned her first collegiate 9.900 and senior Sydney Snead matched her career-high 9.950 in the anchor position. Oklahoma posted a 49.525 on bars.
Georgia’s floor squad posted a 48.925, while Oklahoma scored a 49.325 on beam. Vega scored another 9.900 for her routine, followed by a 9.875 from Snead. Freshman Alyssa Perez-Lugones improved her score to a 9.800, while Dickson and Lukacs contributed scores of 9.725 and 9.625, respectively.
Georgia finished competition on beam, earning a 48.825. Freshman Rachel Baumann led the GymDogs with a 9.875, followed by Vega with a 9.825 and Snead with a 9.750.
The GymDogs return home on Friday, January 18 to welcome the Crimson Tide of Alabama to Stegeman Coliseum. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network’s Friday Night Heights. With a quick turnaround, Georgia will compete again on Monday, January 21 against Iowa State at 1:45 p.m. in Stegeman Coliseum.
