It was inevitable, and all of those Gators, Elephants, Vols and Roosters have known it for years. The State of Georgia produces a consistent supply of the Nation’s best football players and a high percentage of them want to play for the home state University. All of those memes about Georgia’s wine and cheese culture, Athens’ avant-garde art and music preferences and the myriad other wishful reason for UGA’s years of wandering in the SEC hinterlands are crashing like a freshman on Broad Street at 4 AM.
There is a new attitude in Athens, SEC. You have feared the great awakening since the 1980’s – your comforting myths about UGA are about to be swept out with the Tide. The new Dawgs are going to stroll to the bus stop, beat up your big brother and eat your bologna sandwich on the way to school.
Rivals, with a grip on reality, see this transformation and are frightened. Here is one example from a Gator (Spencer Hall):
I am not predicting that Georgia wins the SEC in 2017. My prediction is that if someone else wins the East they will have to play their absolute best game and will leave the field understanding the value of their achievement. That team will also understand that the Bulldogs will be right back after them in 2018 and beyond, but with a deeper roster and a firmer grasp on the requirements of winning football.
“The Process” has begun. It is inexorable. It loves bologna.
