Jake Fromm talks about possible break receivers, and about improvement after first scrimmage

Bulldogs’ quarterback Jake Fromm (11) heads into 2019 as the uncontested starter, and one of the key leaders on the team. Fromm is expected to have another great year statistically, but one of the biggest questions regarding Kirby Smart’s team is how will this inexperienced group of wide receivers pan out.

“The receivers and I seem to be getting more accurate, and the timing of the balls seems to be clicking. We are hitting some deeper shots at practice, and everything seems to be coming together,” said Fromm at Monday’s press interviews.

Fromm seems to be confident in his receiving core as he thinks that it just takes time for guys to adjust. He admitted he really saw a difference from the start of camp to the progress made towards the end. To Fromm, towards the end guys were really starting to make more plays and the competition for reps got increasingly better.

Under new offensive coordinator, James Coley, there seems to be a bit of hype about how much better the offense will be this year.

“We’ll see,” Fromm said when asked about Coley. “For us, we want to be fast and we want to be more physical. We want to do a good job of scoring in the red zone, and we want to get better on third downs. Those are the goals in our minds that we need to get better on offense, and get ready to attack and go into the first week.”

Fromm also talked about what happened in the first scrimmage, and what improved in the second. He thought there was a bit of lull in the first scrimmage and that the offense didn’t execute as it should have, but there was a definite improvement the next Saturday.

For the second scrimmage, we went out there and treated it like a real game. The guys seemed to be a lot more ready, and on offense, we made some explosive plays.”

He commented that senior wideout Tyler Simmons (87) had stepped up as a leader, but he expects guys like George Pickens (1), Demetris Robinson (16), and Matt Landers (5) to continue to play well and compete for playing time.

I’m not one to listen to talk, but yeah. I think this receiving core is being underestimated. After the top four guys left last season, I thought that it’s just time to get back to work. For us, it gives other guys opportunities to step up so it will be nice to see what they can do.”

Over the past two seasons, Fromm has always been very poised and is known to be a great game manager. He has always been a great leader in the locker-room, but it seems like this year he is really ready to be ‘the guy.’ Georgia kicks off against Vanderbilt this Saturday, Aug. 31st, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
