It is time to kick off the season. Well, Week Zero actually got it started this past weekend. But most of the teams in the country get going here on Labor Day weekend. With the portal and all of the issues in college football, predicting the rankings is tougher than ever. But we’ll give it a shot. The goal for every team out there, somehow wind up in that 12-team College Football Playoff.
1. Texas – The Longhorns aim for a third straight playoff berth and then some. They open the season against the Buckeyes in Columbus. Arch Manning takes over at quarterback and he has a lot of talent to work with. The conference schedule is very manageable.
2. Clemson – The Tigers open with LSU in a mega showdown. The winner of that one will likely be ranked No. 2, behind the Texas-Ohio State winner. Cade Klubnick is an outstanding quarterback and Clemson’s defensive line has the potential to be real good.
3. LSU – Can LSU make the jump this season? We’ll know a lot more after the season opener at Clemson. What a great game to kick it off. The Tigers are always good, always talented. This roster looks outstanding. Is this the year for Brian Kelly in Baton Rouge?
4. Ohio State – The defending national champs lost a lot to the NFL.That is some kind of a great opener in The Horseshoe. Texas at Ohio State. I’m having visions of Earl Campbell and Archie Griffin. With a win, Ohio State is booked solid as the Big Ten favorites.
5. Notre Dame – The Fighting Irish have the coach they’ve been looking for in Marcus Freeman. He led Notre Dame to the national title game last year. How about a throw-back for the season opener, as the Irish head south to take on Miami.
6. Georgia – Kirby Smart, now in Year 10 at the helm of his alma mater, is the top coach in College Football, and his Bulldogs figure to once again be in the playoff picture. A completely revamped Marshall Thundering Herd heads to Athens Saturday.
7. Oregon – Dan Lanning led Oregon to the Big Ten title last year, but they went down hard to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Will there be a hangover? Oregon once again figures to be talented. The season opener pits the Ducks with Montana State at Autzen Stadium.
8. Penn State – The Nittany Lions made it to the semifinals of the CFP a year ago, and they are fully confident for a repeat run. Nevada heads to Happy Valley for the season opener. A mega showdown at home against Oregon lurks on September 27.
9. Alabama – Can the Crimson Tide get back to the College Football Playoff? Is Florida State going to be absolutely awful again or do the Seminoles return to form. It’s a big opener at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Bama faithful fully expect a victory.
10. Arizona State – The Sun Devils won the Big XII, and were a fourth down conversion away from beating Texas in Atlanta in the College Football Playoff. Arizona State hosts Northern Arizona in the season opener. Sam Leavitt is a terrific quarterback.
11. Miami – The Hurricanes are hungry to be back amongst the elite. Notre Dame visits in the season opener, renewing the old rivalry. Miami plays the Fighting Irish, Florida and Florida State all in the first half of the schedule. Expectations are high this year.
12. Texas Tech – The Red Raiders may be the best team in the Big XII. They are spending a whole lot of money and are pulling in players traditionally out of their weight class. Texas Tech opens the season in Lubbock against Arkansas Pine-Bluff.
