The regular season is in the books, and a vast majority of the games got played. Well done. Now of course comes the playoff controversy. Ohio State is 6-0 and in. There is a lot of displeasure on that front, especially in College Station. The Buckeyes have a great team, but just six games played, well, that just doesn’t sit well. Ohio State, Oklahoma and Clemson are dynasties in their leagues.
- Alabama – It was a shootout in Atlanta, as Alabama held off Florida 52-46 to win the Southeastern Conference championship. Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide is hands down the best team in the country right now. Player retention was the separating factor this year.
- Clemson – It was an impressive vengeance victory for the Tigers over the Fighting Irish in the ACC Championship Game. Trevor Lawrence’s draft stock, already amongst the highest ever, is even higher.
- Texas A&M – It was a tremendous season for the Aggies, one of their two best since joining the Southeastern Conference back in 2012. Kellen Mond has had a tremendous campaign at quarterback.
- Notre Dame – The Fighting Irish had the perfect regular season but were pummeled by Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. A similar fate likely awaits against Alabama in the semifinals.
- Cincinnati – The Bearcats secured one of their biggest wins in school history, knocking through a last-second field goal to win the American Conference in a thriller of Tulsa. Now comes a chance at what would be the biggest win ever against Georgia.
- Coastal Carolina – It was an incredible season for the Chanticleers, who are perfect. Unfortunately, due to you know what, we were robbed of a Sun Belt Championship rematch with the once-beaten Ragin’ Cajuns.
- Ohio State – The eyeball test meant everything for the kings of the Big Ten. A 6-0 record was good enough for a semifinal berth. It was hairy in the Big Ten Championship Game against Northwestern, but the Buckeyes pulled away in the fourth.
- Georgia – The Bulldogs 7-2 and headed for the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl to face Cincinnati. The losses came to Alabama and Florida. Georgia is riding a three-game winning streak, sparked by quarterback JT Daniels.
- Indiana – What a season it was for the Hoosiers, who took down Penn State, Michigan, and Michigan State. The only loss was by a touchdown to the Buckeyes. A trip to the Outback Bowl to face Ole Miss awaits.
- Oklahoma – Sheer dominance of the Big XII. That’s Oklahoma. The Sooners are 11-1 all-time in Big XII Championship Games. Now it’s a big-time showdown with Florida in the Cotton Bowl in what should be a high scoring affair.
- Brigham Young – The Cougars have had a tremendous season, losing only a thriller to Coastal Carolina. BYU tangles with Central Florida in the Boca Raton Bowl. That could be a shootout. The Cougars are a complete team.
- Florida – The Gators lost a pair of games on last-second field goals and then hung in there with Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. Kyle Trask and Kyle Pitts have both had tremendous seasons for Florida.
- Louisiana – Lafayette – Going back to the season-opening victory at Iowa State, it has been a spectacular season for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Their only loss was a thriller to Coastal Carolina. Unfortunately, there was no rematch.
- Iowa State – For the Cyclones, beating Oklahoma and Texas in the same season is an accomplishment for the ages. They had a valiant comeback but came up short in the rematch against the Sooners for the Big XII Championship.
- San Jose State – Champions of the Mountain West conference, the Spartans of San Jose State have put together a first-rate undefeated season. Now they try and put the finishing touches on the campaign against Ball State in the Arizona Bowl.
