This past weekend was one of the most memorable in a long time. There were a slew of upsets, as five of the top 11 teams in the country lost. Most notably, Alabama fell to Vanderbilt in Nashville. Incredible! There would have been a sixth, but Miami had an incredible comeback win at Cal. You better be ready every week. As a reminder, since the four bye slots in the College Football Playoff go to the champs of the four major conferences, a team from each of those leagues will be ranked in the top four. Also, a Group of Five team gets a berth, and that will be No. 12.
1. Texas – The Longhorns were off this past Saturday, and now get ready for the Red River Rivalry. Texas has an explosive offense and the Longhorns have gotten very good on the defensive front. Their schedule is much more favorable than their rival Sooners.
2. Ohio State – The Buckeyes posted an impressive 35-7 win over Iowa and they look like the best team in the Big Ten. It’s 5-0 and off to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks. Ohio State has outstanding talent at running back and wide receiver.
3. Miami – The Hurricanes were absolute toast. Done. No chance across the country at Cal. But they had a fourth quarter comeback for the ages and defeated the Golden Bears 39-38 to improve to 6-0. The improbability of their last two wins is staggering.
4. Brigham Young – The 5-0 Cougars were off this past week and now take on Arizona in a critical Big XII game. The game will be in Provo at LaVell Edwards Stadium, where BYU is so tough. They have some high-end wins, including topping Kansas State.
5. Penn State – The Nittany Lions got an impressive win over UCLA 27-11 in a Big Ten game. Penn State is now a perfect 5-0 on the season and dreaming big. It’s off to the Coliseum this week for a big one against Southern Cal, shades of the ’82 Fiesta Bowl.
6. Oregon – Here come the Buckeyes for one of the most high profile games ever played in Eugene. The winner of this one has a leg up in the Big Ten and College Football Playoff race. Oregon’s offense is really coming together. Autzen Stadium will be rocking.
7. Alabama – For the first time since 1984, Alabama lost to Vanderbilt. This one was dominated by the Commodores, who never trailed. The Crimson Tide comes home Saturday to take on South Carolina, which got beaten badly by Ole Miss.
8. Georgia – The Bulldogs put together an impressive 31-13 victory over Auburn, winning for the eighth straight time in the series. Georgia is now 4-1, and 2-1 in the SEC. It’s a second straight home game, as Mississippi State heads to Athens Saturday.
9. Clemson – The Tigers have been on fire since the season-opening loss to Georgia in Atlanta. Clemson took care of Florida State 29-13 to make it 4-1 on the season. It should be 5-1 after this coming week, as Clemson heads to Winston-Salem for the Deacs.
10. Texas A&M – In one of the all-time great performances by the Aggies, they blew away top 10 foe Missouri at Kyle Field. Texas A&M is now 5-1 and winners of five in a row. The Aggies are off this week, then head to Starkville for Mississippi State.
11. Tennessee – The Volunteers got out in front of Arkansas in Fayetteville, but the Razorbacks stormed back for a 19-14 upset. Tennessee hosts Florida in Knoxville Saturday. This used to be one of the biggest games in the country.
12. Boise State – The Broncos had the offense cooking in a 62-30 rout of Utah State. Boise State slides into James Madison’s spot after the Dukes fell to Lou Monroe. Boise State heads to the island Saturday to take on Hawaii. That could be dangerous.
