Jim Chaney Brings Home Five-Star Quarterback Justin Fields to UGA

Justin Fields RAREBREED18 edit by Bob Miller / Bulldawg Illustrated

For Bulldawg fans, Georgia’s 2018 quarterback recruiting has been a long roller coaster ride that has had more ups and downs, twist and turns than the Six Flags’ ride Mind Bender. In the end, though, Offensive Coordinator Jim Chaney has done it again and brought home another five-star quarterback prospect with Justin Fields announcing his decision to commit to UGA shortly after 11:00 a.m. ET Friday morning.

Fields originally committed to Penn State back on December 1st of last year, but Georgia and Jim Chaney never gave up on the Peach State signal caller, continuing to recruit him. And when he de-committed from the Nittany Lions just a few weeks ago on June 6th, reopening up his recruitment, the Bulldogs found themselves right back in the race for Fields, who has over 41 scholarship offers. He chose to commit to UGA over Auburn, Florida, and FSU.

It’s not surprising that Fields has as many offers as he does. The 6 foot 3, and 221 lbs quarterback out of Harrison High School from Kennesaw, GA is rated as one of the top dual-threat prospects in the country for 2018 and 247, ESPN, Rivals, and Scout all rate him as a consensus five-star prospect. Fields is also considered one of the top players from the state of Georgia for 2018 and he is rated a top 247, ESPN300, Rivals 100, and Scout 100 player.

While the Hoyas’ two-sport star, Fields is also an accomplished baseball player, is considered a dual-threat quarterback, and he can hurt you with his legs with his 4.51 forty speed, Fields looks to throw the ball first. When he does, it is easy to see why he is considered one of the top quarterback prospects. The ball comes out of his hand with some mustard on it, and we are talking spicy hot. You can hear the ball pop when it hits the receivers’ hands during the game, and to watch Fields throw the deep ball is a thing of pure beauty. I would like to see him learn to dial back the heat on the shorter throws and on those throws that don’t need the velocity. And that is one area he can improve in along with accuracy.

But that is understandable. Fields missed part of his sophomore season due to injury. He has built on a spectacular junior campaign where he threw 279 passes, completing 186 for over 2,770 yards and 23 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions to have a solid senior season so far. Fields has completed 58-of-96 passing, 60.4% completion percentage, for 974 yards with 12 touchdowns to just one interception, and he has also rushed for 575 yards and 10 touchdowns on 76 carries in five games. Fields has not only looked impressive when the lights have come on during Friday nights in Georgia, but he has also “wowed” the crowds and scouts at the camps over the spring and summer.

With Fields’ commitment, Georgia now has 16 commitments for 2018, and next fall, the Bulldogs could be sporting one of the most talented quarterback depth charts in college football with Justin joining two other former five-star recruiting prospects Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm.
