The No. 6-ranked Georgia women’s golf team posted a 7-over 295 in Sunday’s opening round of the LTWF Heroes Intercollegiate, placing the Bulldogs tied for seventh on the team leaderboard at the Founders Club.
“We played well and made enough birdies,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “We just need to clean up a few things to eliminate some mistakes. If we do that, we could find ourselves with a chance to win this golf tournament. Our goal tomorrow is to go out and play well enough to move up and into the lead or at least to put some pressure on whoever is leading going into the final day.”
Jo Hua Hung led the Bulldogs with a 1-under 71 on Sunday. Georgia also counted a 73 from Jenny Bae, a 75 from Caterina Don and a 76 from Caroline Craig.
Hung tee off from No. 14 with Sunday’s shotgun start. She “turned” at 1-over following a bogey at No 17. Consecutive birdies at No. 4 and No. 5 pushed her into red numbers; however, a bogey at No. 9 brought her back to even. Hung completed her loop with a birdie at No. 13 to notch her low round of the season.
“It was a really good round by Jo,” Brewer said. “To finish with a birdie on her last hole is what we’re looking for. We need everyone to take advantage of the opportunities we have to finish off a round and finish off a tournament.”
Oklahoma State’s Maja Stark leads the individual field following a 6-under 66. For Georgia, Hung is tied for eighth, Bae is tied for 15th, Don is tied for 28th, Craig is tied for 38th and Celeste Dao, who signed for a 79, is tied for 59th.
Ole Miss is atop the team leaderboard after shooting 4-under 284. Oklahoma State is second at 288, and rounding out the top-10 teams are Iowa State at 291, and Northwestern at 292, Clemson and Texas Tech both at 294, the Bulldogs and Virginia Tech both at 295, tournament host Purdue at 297 and Tennessee at 298.
The tournament will continue through Tuesday. Play is set to continue with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start both days. On Monday, the Bulldogs will be paired with Virginia Tech and Purdue, teeing off on holes No. 8-10.
